I am assuming trailer does not announce 'This is the last scene', so it might be ok depending on what the last scene is...

The trailer doesnt "ruin" anything and if you had never heard that they show some stuff from the last couple of scenes you would never notice until you saw the movie. NOTHING will be lost by watching it.
Give it a go, it looks beautiful and gives a decent sense of whats in store. It of course is still a fairly slow film.

How about letting them decide for themselves? Each one knows how sensitive to spoilers he or she is.

And the ending does contain a revelation that albeit small is nonetheless rather moving, and is not meant to be revealed beforehand - otherwise it wouldn't be the last scene.

Of course those who haven't seen the film yet wouldn't know it from watching the trailer, but when they finally do watch the film and the scene comes, it won't be new to them anymore. Therefore, I say it's something of a spoiler. What's the problem in giving people a heads-up? Jeez.

Funny the last scene was "spoiled" in the trailer. I'm currently going through The Story of Film and Stalker's ending was shown, though not in its entirety. I've never seen Stalker, but hopefully I'll forget the ending, which seems unlikely, before I purchase the BD during the B&N sale in July.

EDIT: Curious what you'll think of In a Lonely Place. I think it's Bogie's greatest performance. A true gem of a film.
Agree about the acting in "In a Lonely Place," but I watch it as though it's closer to the novel: Bogart's character is a homicidal maniac, his cop friend coerced a confession out of an innocent citizen, and Graham's character is covering for Bogart's.

To be fair, it's not like Tarkovsky's films can really be "spoiled." Seeing that ending really won't ruin anything.

It goes without saying that Stalker is most definitely not a mystery thriller with a plot twist that changes everything that came before a la Sixth Sense or The Usual Suspects. Seeing what happens in the last scene indeed won't "ruin" the whole thing. But it might take a little from said scene, which is a kind of revelation. Again, I say there are viewers who are more sensitive to "spoilers" than others. Apparently, not many here are.

Nevermind, just pretend I didn't post anything and carry on.

Right, it ruins nothing plot wise which means its not a "spoiler". Two seconds of an out of context shot that explains nothing isnt going to ruin anyone's enjoyment of this movie, they wont even know that the moment has happened until it's passed. The most that will happen is they'll say "oh yeah, I remember this shot" and that will be that. If that can ruin a movie for someone why ever watch a single trailer thats ever been created at all?

Weirdly, you don't get to tell people what will diminish their own enjoyment of a film.

The restored version of the film is actually on YT via Mosfilm's channel, if you want to skim through it fo see what it looks like. It's going to look amazing on Blu-ray.

(You may have tonopen it in an app or desktop browser to view it)

I saw the trailer and it didn't spoil anything. Now I can't rewatch it since the ending of the trailer is the ending. Good for that poster ruining the trailer. I'll probably still rewatch it.

His performance in The Caine Mutiny is also highly underrated and almost never talked about. See it if you haven't.

I've never seen Stalker either, so this will be quite special to see the movie for the first time on a blu-ray disc thanks to Criterion. The July sale couldn't come any sooner.

I am super excited about this release too - I hope there is a UK one announced soon.

It's such a shame that the rare opportunity of seeing this on the big screen last year was one that used the terrible AE print. I remember thinking how it looked like a transfer off a VHS. Still, it didn't stop it from being a great experience!

I plan to watch my February Flash Sale purchases, which includes the following titles: The Night of the Hunter(decided to buy the new plastic case version after selling my digipak that was somewhat worn out), One-Eyed Jacks, and His Girl Friday.

I have watched The Night of the Hunter several times on blu and it's one of my favorite Criterion titles. I look forward to watching One-Eyed Jacks and His Girl Friday on blu for the first time soon. Just have to pull myself away from the new season of Documentary Now! on Netflix.

I don't think there's a scene that hits me harder than the peep show/subsequent hotel scene at the end of Paris, Texas. It's the sole reason I can't bring myself to watch the film often, despite it being my favorite film. It's a god damn masterclass in acting from Kinski.

This shot won't leave my head.

Saw Valley of the Dolls last night. Not without its entertainingly melodramatic merits, and not so much a "bad" movie as it is a beautiful mess. Relationships between characters are poorly defined, and there are many characters you just don't know what their function is in the story. The 3 girls are supposed to know each other and are/were apparently friends but you would hardly know that fact from this screenplay. The subplots also very inelegantly jump from one scene to another.

I suppose its reputation as "camp" stems from the fact that it's written, shot and edited like a 50s Douglas Sirk movie, though obviously Sirk would probably have made it more coherent. In fact you would never have known this was released in 1967 unless you checked. By 1967 I can imagine how the hippies would have received this.

Still, if taken as a hallucination, its incoherent-ness works I guess. And Patty Duke's performance...hilariously overacted to its fitting extreme.

And man, Sharon Tate really was gorgeous, wasn't she...

Criterion: Othello Blu-ray Release Delayed

Quote:
The Criterion Collection has informed us that the upcoming Blu-ray release of Orson Welles' Othello will be delayed. The release was scheduled to arrive on the market on May 23.

A new street date has not yet been announced, but as soon as it is confirmed we will update you.

Synopsis: Gloriously cinematic despite being made on a tiny budget, Orson Welles's Othello is a testament to the filmmaker's stubborn willingness to pursue his vision to the ends of the earth. Unmatched in his passionate identification with Shakespeare's imagination, Welles brings his inventive visual approach to this enduring tragedy of jealousy, bigotry, and rage, and also gives a towering performance as the Moor of Venice, alongside Suzanne Cloutier as his innocent wife, Desdemona, and Micheál MacLiammóir as the scheming Iago. Shot over the course of three years in Morocco, Venice, Tuscany, and Rome and plagued by many logistical problems, this fiercely independent film joins Macbeth and Chimes at Midnight in making the case for Welles as the cinema's most audacious interpreter of the Bard.

Special Features:
New, restored 4K digital transfers of two versions of the film, the 1952 European version and the 1955 U.S. version, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks on the Blu-ray
Audio commentary featuring filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich and Orson Welles scholar Myron Meisel
Return to Glennascaul, a 1953 short film made by MacLiammóir and actor Hilton Edwards during a hiatus from shooting Othello
New interview with Welles biographer Simon Callow
New interview with Welles scholar François Thomas on the differences between the two versions
New interview with Ayanna Thompson, author of Passing Strange: Shakespeare, Race, and Contemporary America
Interview from 2014 with Welles scholar Joseph McBride
And MORE...
PLUS: An essay by film critic Geoffrey O'Brien
