Announcement will come moments after I retire for bed. Always happens, the longer i sit waiting the longer it takes for releases.

Maybe I will go to bed shortly.

To kill some time while we wait:

It looks like Rialto is sending a new 4K restoration of Leon Morin, Priest for the Melville retros touring around:
http://www.rialtopictures.com/catalo...n-morin-priest

It's showing in NYC this week, and in Cleveland, Chicago, and Berkeley in the near future. So I guess add this to the list of potential Criterion 4k upgrade re-releases, along with Battle of Algiers? Was Leon Morin a StudioCanal causalty, is that why it went out of print?

The fact that the DVD is now OOP tends to make me feel that a Blu-ray will be coming sooner than later.

My old DVD needs to be retired.

Does anyone here prefer Todd Haynes' Mildred Pierce. I saw the first two parts yesterday and I thought it was fantastic. Obvioisly the performances are fantastic and the telling nuanced, but it's not very televisual at all. The way the camera documents the bric-a-brac, property, and wealth that surrounds Mildred seems to form a dialogue with the narrative.

I'm really impressed so far and I can't wait to revisit the movie in the near future.

Yes. Criterion lost the rights to Leon Morin, Priest, along with Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, and other Melville films.

It's a wonderful, wonderful movie, but I'm hard-pressed to imagine how a 4K restoration could improve substantially upon the already impressive existing presentation.

I would be floored if we got 24 Hour Party People. One of my favorite films of the last 20 years (I am also a big music geek as well). Always struck me as odd that this film does not have a proper full blown special edition Blu Ray set. There are so many great extras that could be put on here (i.e. great BBC Docs, older archival Tony Wilson programs, great commentary with Coogan, live musical performances, etc.).

Isn't that a Warner release? Don't they tend to release their own material?

Criterion has gotten into WB: Before Sunrise/Sunset, Blow-Up, Cat People, The New World, Pan's Labyrinth, Barcelona, etc.

Criterion has been licensing Warner titles on a regular basis for at least a year now.

I dunno, I'm torn by collector's dilemma. Do I want to live in a world where I can add Roman Holiday to my collection. Or do I want to live in a world where I can eagerly savor the anticipation of adding Roman Holiday to my collection, which might be a brighter and happier place?

Kind of like with women.

Yeeeeeeeesssss! I would scream if this got announced. A terrific film.

I would also take Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) or Freaks (1932).

Oh, FREAKS I'd go ape for.

I watched JEKYLL the other night for the first time and wasn't too impressed. I liked elements of it (March's performance, the sexual angst, the sets), but thought it kind of plodding and meadering, and overlong. And also a bit repetitive too. Could be having read the text multiple times. But the Barrymore version reigns supreme for me.
