Yeah, I spent way too much this month on too many deals that were too good to pass up from Flicker Alley and TT. Also didn't help I kept finding good deals on rare OOP BluRays/DVDs on Ebay. Though when that little voice says "come on buy something before B&N sale" I'm going to say think how much Criterions you can buy if you dont spend money.

Also question, when you pre-order from Criterion's website, does your CC get charged when you order or when the item is shipped? Since I'm thinking of possibly pre-ordering Rebecca instead of waiting for the sale or until it's listed on Amazon(which I'm shocked hasn't happened yet).

I just finished watching my Criterion Blu-ray of They Live by Night.
![]() When an escaped convict, Bowie, played by Farley Granger (Strangers on a Train, Rope), falls in love with Keechie, a beautiful girl played by Cathy O'Donnell (The Best Years of Our Lives, Ben-Hur), the two of them take off on the road in hopes of leading an honest and normal life. Their plans are endangered as the ex-con's friends track them down and as the police manhunt closes in. They Live by Night took film noir in new directions, partly because of the Romeo and Juliet storyline and partly because of its rural locations which are far removed from the usual cityscapes and back alleys of noir. It's also a standout "lovers on the run" crime movie that sits well on the shelf with You Only Live Once, Gun Crazy, Bonnie and Clyde, Badlands, and even Wisdom . This was the directorial debut of Nicholas Ray, who would later helm classics like In a Lonely Place, Rebel Without a Cause, Johnny Guitar, and Bigger Than Life. Like those films, They Live by Night sympathizes with the outcasts and underdogs of society. The romance of this movie has a clear "This will not end well." vibe throughout, but we're pulling for Bowie and Keechie the whole time, and this makes the heartbreaking moments of the story all the more powerful as well as making the happy moments all the more joyful. This is an excellent live-life-to-the-fullest-while-you-can movie, and I really enjoy the fanciful scenes where the two leads drift through the corrupt world that surrounds them. This Criterion Blu-ray looks amazing. The audio presentation shines, considering what this restoration probably had to work with. The title music is somewhat distorted, and this seems to be an obvious source issue, but I did not notice any other issues during the film. An interview with film noir historian Imogen Sara Smith puts this film into perspective with its place in the noir genre. John Houseman discusses his role as a producer in a brief interview, while the short feature, "They Live by Night": The Twisted Road, assembles takes on the film by different critics and filmmakers. The commentary by noir historian Eddie Muller and Farley Granger, which I'm listening to now, is the lion's roar of the extras, and it's a fun track. Well done, Criterion! It's great to see one of my most anticipated films noir transferred to high definition so well. (This is one of those films about which I could probably write paragraphs upon paragraphs, but I'm sort of sleepy now.) Last edited by The Great Owl; 06-19-2017 at 12:52 AM. |

[Show spoiler] . A fascinating film but not for everyone and, like Ray_Rogers posted, I couldn't recommend it as a blind buy.
