I walked into Half Price Books earlier this afternoon to see what I can find since I had a 50% off coupon I wanted to use. As I was looking through the blu-rays, I noticed the guy next to me had a copy of Pierrot le Fou on blu-ray. I just glanced over and he was looking up prices on eBay. I was hoping he would decide against it and put it back. He never did. I didn't leave empty handed. I picked up a mint copy of Rashomon on blu-ray for $13 and change.

Watched that for the first time a couple of weeks ago, Landau and Palance chewed every bit of scenery available

Ed Wood Remains one of my fave films. Such an amazing cast. Helps too that I have a signed Ed Wood trading card set by Drew Friedman

They Live by Night: a great presentation of a mediocre effort. The predictable story is not helped by the silly lines and dumb lead characters. Would would anyone really care about the characters? I guess they figured that casting a couple of good looking actors will suffice?

Sure, we know how it will end before it starts, but the trip from a to b challenged my willingness to finish the film. Replay value = ZERO. My recommendation: save your money for something better .

I thought "They Lived by Night" was solid, didn't have the same distaste for it as you did. After recently rewatching Altman's remake "Thieves Like Us", it's a better film though. Definitely check out "Thieves Like Us". Carradine and Duvall are both fantastic.

He was also brilliant in "Crimes and Misdemeanors". RIP to a great actor.

I thought it was a solid first film for Nicholas Ray. That said, I do like the similar You Only Live Once much better.

Wow, just a few days ago I posted these old pics I shot of George Romero and now he's dead. That cannot be a coincidence. How sad, but he did live a long life... and now that he's truly dead, his legacy will live on with the living dead legacy he created in the 1960s. Rest in Peace sir.

George seemed like a really cool dude. I suggest people check out "The Dark Half" as well. Seems like he got frustrated with studio interference after that, but it actually ended up being a very effective film. There's a great interview with George on the Scream Factory disc where he talks extensively about some of the behind the scenes issues on that film. Sad day losing Martin and George, two real legends.

Totally. Especially when I saw some of the actual EW films like Bride of the Monster (after seeing the Burton film), I was struck by Mr. Landau's uncanny emulation of Bela Lugosi. He really captured the aura of the actor.

Maybe not zero replay value, but, yeah, I was similarly mystified by the seemingly unrestrained praise for this one when I saw it a few months back. Little enough replay value for me that I resisted picking it up at the absurdly low price it was on Amazon, since I'm happy to wait for it to play near me to see it again. I thought it was a solid first film, but definitely a first film by a director still figuring out how to direct and what his style is.

But aside from In a Lonely Place, my appreciation of Ray seems to be skewed from that of his most vocal admirers anyway. I think Rebel is still his best (that I've seen) but it seems to be the victim of backlash. And I'd rate On Dangerous Ground and Party Girl over Bigger than Life, They Live by Night, and The Lusty Men (the latter of which I found to be dreadful). Johnny Guitar is in the middle, but it's such a weird movie I need to see it again to decide if it goes any higher.

I'm just curious when you reach 500 points on Criterion.com do they send you the $50 Gift Certificate right away or does it take some time?
