I can't tell if that's supposed to be snark.

It's funny you should mention Pandora's Box. Louise Brooks came up earlier today in another thread, and I was thinking of how much I love that film along with Diary of a Lost Girl. Diary is available on a Kino release, but Criterion has never updated PB. And from what I can tell, it has never been released on Blu-ray -- which is weird, considering what a famous film it is.

Not snark, per se, but sympathetic understatement.

To be more transparent, it's among my personal top 20, so I think you should give it a shot.

Lulu Brooks also shines in BEGGARS OF LIFE. Kino has it out on Blu-ray I believe.

Rashomon is also among the TSPDT Top 20 and widely considered one of the great films of all time. It was my first Criterion BD, and remains one of my favorites. You should definitely give it a shot.

Thanks.

I'd love to see Miss Europe, but can't find it. Doesn't seem to exist on disc.

Beggars of Life certainly does sound good, and it looks like a good release -- two commentaries! Thank again.

Fair enough. I made a similar comment about a handful of Criterion films way back when I first started posting here, and someone immediately jumped down my throat about it.

I didn't think it was worth Criterion prices completely blind initially, but now that I've got a bit more of an idea of what I'll be in for I'll definitely look at it. Lots of others on my wishlist still, though - I owned zero Criterion discs only five months ago (although I had a few of their titles via non-US distributors, and a giant United Artists 90th Anniversary DVD set).

They're never $15, and the next sale is in February. As has been stated several times.

He was asking first about the next Barnes & Noble Criterion sale. Those happen twice a year, in July and November.

The sale happening in a few weeks is the 24 hour Criterion Flash sale. Just to be clear.

Obviously everyone's tastes are different, but at minimum the films on the TSPDT list are highly regarded by a wide variety of film critics, publications, filmmakers, etc. Not surprisingly, it includes many CC titles.

Looks like I've knocked off just over half the top ten, which isn't bad. I think I've managed all but Raging Bull from the top ten of the two AFI lists (I do own it, but haven't got to it yet).

EDIT: In response to the 'top 1000' list.

Raging Bull is in my top 20, also. You have work to do!

Hmm, I have 134 of the top 200 on blu-ray. A good number of the ones I don’t have aren’t out, yet, but I have my work cut out for me, nonetheless.

Interestingly enough, about 30% of those I don’t have are sitting on my DVR right now. I’m currently working on The Magnificent Ambersons. Can’t believe how much the studio jacked with Welles’ vision, according to the outline that survives of how he wanted he final cut to play out. It’s no wonder that he became so untrusting of Hollywood.
