Every single video or article now has threads of people slamming the crap out of John Lennon. The most irritating of all is the John Lennon Official Facebook Page. Every single post is trolled to hell and back with Lennon-hate. I don't know why those people "Like" and follow the page to begin with, other than to troll. I stopped following it because I was sick of it. I don't know why the admins of that page allow all of that. It's making real fans stop going there. Any article on Yahoo or anything like that about Lennon also gets filled with hate comments. It's weird because all of this just started in the past year or two. Apparently, it's becoming a thing to dismiss Brando, too.

Hey, everybody. Put me down for Forty Guns and Panique for sure.

A Dry White Season looks strong as well.

Not interested in the December titles, I thought it was a pretty dry year for Criterion.

You consider having Night of the Living Dead, Silence of the Lambs, Midnight Cowboy, A Matter of Life and Death, My Man Godfrey, Some Like It Hot, Shampoo, A Raisin' in the Sun, Young Mr. Lincoln and a gigantic Ingmar Bergman box set "a pretty dry year"?

Seriously though. I absolutely love how one random poster makes a cutting remark and you instantly blame an entire generation.
All that was missing was the word, "snowflake."

Forty Guns for sure! A Dry White Season sounds like it might be a good blind buy!

That'd be an opinion one might respect if Criterion specialized in just one kind of movie, but they don't. They released and announced dozens upon dozens of diverse films this year, including some highly requested titles. I can't fathom how anyone might shrug at most of them unless the person is uninterested in anything related to classic, arthouse and world cinema.

I'll pick up Forty Guns come sale time as I collect B&W Scope films and don't have the MoC release. The Bergman is in the forthcoming box set, so no point in getting the standalone.

Within the last year, cable seems to have decided to show a bunch of apartheid movies, especially around the most recent Black History Month. I hadn't seen any of them, so I watched "Cry Freedom", "Dry White Season" and whatever the John Avildsen one is called, I forget. "Dry White Season" was definitely the best one (I did not see "A World Apart", which Ebert mentions in his review and seems to fit the trend too), and has a lot of interesting things to say about how the white people of South Africa were able to willfully ignore the evils going on all around them...

I don't know if I'd recommend a blind buy; it depends on how you collect. I think it's a very good film to see once, but I'm not sure I'd watch it again any time soon. A lot of posters here seem extra-sensitive to liberalism in movies, so be aware, this was definitely a "big important topic" in the late '80's, and there's a reason this movie stars Donald Sutherland and Susan Sarandon (and Brando, for that matter).

I don't think you could argue that this one was undeserved. You could argue that he's not a proper Supporting Actor, though; for the 15 or 20 minutes that his character appears, he dominates the movie completely. It's basically a great short courtroom film in the middle of a good feature film.
