Any chance of an upgrade of The Human Condition? I know there's an Arrow Blu-Ray, but if Criterion releases a version sourced from a newer 2K or 4K restoration, maybe it'll be even better.

The Arrow LE BD released in 2016 was touted as a "Brand new restoration from a 4K scan of the original negative." I missed out on that set, but recently picked up the newer non-LE release - which I assume has the same transfers. I've not watched it yet, but the Beaver review is very positive and the caps looks solid.

The Criterion DVD is still in print, so a BD release is entirely possible.

My investigation is ongoing. I'm on my 14th consecutive Murakami (1Q84) and will knock out every book he's ever written.

True, I'll probably have to build a shrine for it.

... A special dedicated space where I could every so often marvel at this magnificent piece of art.

Hopefully it arrives mint as there isn't a B&N anywhere nearby me.

Close! but you're not quite right there.

To me Hausu is more like when Mentos meets Coke. #JollyGoodFun

The Arrow set is not from any 4k or 2k restoration but the same HD transfers that the Criterion DVD set is from.

It's my favorite of the year thus far and makes the seven year wait since his last worth it. It is as good as a Murakami adaptation can be.

Also, 1Q84 is a quicker read than some suggest, I feel. I blew through it once I got around the midway point. The Wind-up Bird Chronicle remains my favorite, I think... or South of the Border, West of the Sun.

Burning is indeed one of the year’s great films but my personal favorite so far this year is The Wild Pear Tree by Nuri Bilge Ceylon, another Bergman meets Tarkovsky masterpiece.

Can't wait to see Burning. I think Criterion should take a run at Oasis, great film.

A little late to the party on this, but I haven't looked at the forum in a while... Anyways, when y'all were discussing Clueless and other Amy Heckerling films possibly coming to the Criterion Collection, I remembered this interview from 2016 with the director in The Current. The only film specifically asked about in the interview was Clueless. I bet it's coming out in the next two years, probably sooner.

https://www.criterion.com/current/po...amy-heckerling

In regards to Mean Girls (directed by someone else, but also Paramount) it should be noted that the screenplay is by Tina Fey and there seems to be an increased focus by Criterion on female artists, so it is a distinct possibility.

I was wondering, with The Tales of Hoffmann probably coming back to Criterion and Gone to Earth going to KL, is it possible that the estates of Powell and Pressburger decided to pull a Tati and go around StudioCanal to get their films distributed, or is StudioCanal being more flexible?

Default Upcoming Criterion Sale

I’m looking forward to the upcoming sale later this month. I think my wishlist is finalized:

A Matter of Life and Death
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
The Tree of Life
Rashomon
Wings of Desire
The Game

I sold off Wings of Desire for some reason I can’t remember a couple years ago. That is a mistake I plan to correct soon.

The Tree of Life is a blind buy, but I have a good feeling about it. I intend to make a double feature with it and The Thin Red Line.

A Matter of Life and Death was one of my most wanted blu-ray titles for years, so I’m really anticipating watching that together with The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp as a Powell-Pressburger double feature.

I recently upgraded my DVD of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, so that will make a rather unusual pairing with Fincher’s The Game.

Buying six more titles will earn me my first $50 gift certificate from Criterion. It took longer than I thought it would to spend $500 at their shop (I placed my first order with them in February of 2014). I intend to use the certificate to preorder The Princess Bride and Forty Guns.

I’m hoping that the first half of 2019 will bring us Godzilla and Wong Kar-Wai sets along with a good blu-ray of Roman Holiday from any company. TCM, Criterion, ...I don’t care who it is as long as it happens soon.

Speaking of the sale, what's more likely? That it's this week or next week? I can't hold the urge back much longer for the sale.

Wait a bit? Wings of Desire 4K restoration being theatrically screened through Janus Films, perhaps a revised blu-ray later from Criterion?

https://filmforum.org/film/wings-of-desire

There is already a German release with the new restoration, but it may not have English subtitles.

Tati's estate (Les Films de Mon Oncle) owns Tati's films, though. P&P's doesn't.

A few members here posted previous Criterion fall flash sale dates for 2016 & 2017 and both were around the middle of the month, so maybe 10/16 for this year? I will check this forum and Criterion around lunchtime this upcoming Tuesday to see if the trend will change. I’m really looking forward to the sale as well and to preordering a few titles from Criterion for the first time with my $50 certificate.

Hmmmm...maybe I should hold off on rebuying Wings of Desire. Thanks for reminding me that Janus will be screening a new 4K restoration later this month. I guess it’s possible that Criterion may rerelease the blu-ray next year.
