Was Shampoo a blind buy or one you’ve already seen? I’ve seen differing opinions. When I last talked to my father he thought it was brilliant. I’m sort of on the fence on that one.

I enjoy Welles' movies greatly. For me Kane is a lot of fun. The only problem I have with Welles is he seemed to associate with some unsavory characters to get funding on his pictures. I think it's a big reason why some of his films were stuck in rights hell. Also, Welles could've picked his battles better.

The infamous story about Welles going to South America and having Ambersons butchered is devastating. I suppose after he upset the wrong people with Kane he fought an uphill battle to get his films made the rest of his career.

I owned the DVD. Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of it when I saw it. I found it both undercooked and obvious, but an idiosyncratic film nonetheless. In the decade since, I have come to respect Hal Ashby after seeing all of his 70's output (especially The Last Detail, Coming Home and Bound for Glory), so I figure I should give it another shot now with this purdy transfer and all.

It's important to give access all the greatest films in the world to the world.
This is not a privilege, it is a gift in the teachings of arts and culture of filmmaking.

Tag, you're it.
Are we allowed to count Amazon price matches? Because then two. Bergman and Some Like it Hot when Amazon price matched WM. I would've loved to grab more but I have a few orders in December and I might want to make a small order for one of the numerous sales going around like TT.

Fair question: Criterion Collection stands as the best, why are they not releasing the masterpieces in 4K?
Why give people an inferior format in a 4K world?

Like some of you, I'll just wait for the next flash sale to go a little crazy.
Beauty and the Beast is such a beautiful blend of surrealism and fantasy. A dreamlike oddity like no other. I prefer it to Orpheus.

Wings of Desire is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's a life changer and a tear jerker for me.

Solaris is a total trip. Requires a little patience but I find it to be a pleasant watch.

You did an outstanding job with these three pics.

Of their currently announced or released titles on Blu-ray, how many would you repurchase in 4K?

More specifically, how many titles that were made before 2000?

I'm just now getting into 4K and I already know that the majority of the Criterion releases I own will never get a 4K physical release. Either because there's not a reason or they'd never justify the cost. At best, I see Criterion releasing UHDs only of their most popular titles and maybe the occasional surprise. But those surprises would probably be lesser-demand films that at least have visual selling power like Richard III, One-Eyed Jacks, or Playtime as they were shot in large format. I think we'll see way more 4K available from them via streaming/download over time, especially since a good percentage of their catalog have existing 4K masters.

Paul Schrader, at the screenwriting lecture at BAFTA. If you ever have the chance to attend one of these, he’s brilliant, and actually provides some practical advice.

I think 4K UHDs will probably come out for some of their bigger titles like Silence of the Lambs, Breakfast Club, and Princess Bride, though probably from their respective studios and not Criterion.

I argued multiple times about the eyes ability to detect the difference between 1080p and 4k. At 9 feet which is the average viewing distance the screen needs to be around 140 inches for you to be able to tell the difference between 4k and 1080p and this is if your vision is 20/20. This is scientifically proven.

Now those how rebuked me told me it was more about the HDR, HDR+, Dolby Vision etc.... and the range of colors that a film presents in 4k. Now when you take a film and apply all these new elements to it who decides how and where? On Nolan’s films, Nolan did. On 2001, Nolan was also involved, and half this forum cried like little girls, even though he did a great job on the disc. The majority of 4k films are newer films. Yes some are old, but not many.

So... now insert Criterion. Ok so we’re not getting the benefit of the resolution until we all have 140 inch plus tv’s which isn’t happening anytime soon, so now we are going to apply these new HDR and Dolby Vision treatments to films where everyone involved in the production is dead. So who gets to say how these treatments are used?

Some people already have issues with how the coloring looked in Criterion’s Silence of the Lambs Blu Ray (it’s too blue). Now you want them to make a 4k disc where there are even more color variables. You’re probably just going to have half the Criterion crowd pissing and moaning. The big Studios are loaded so they don’t care.

At this point unless something major changes, Criterion has no reason to create 4k discs, and they are smart to continue not doing so.

The average Criterion purchaser doesn't have a viewing distance of nine feet, I can guarantee you that. Even with my fifteen feet sitting here as a huge outlier to bump the average up.

The average is irrelevant. Those people are still buying DVDs, and are quite happy with that. That's not who UHD is for, and that's not who Criterion is for.

One of the more massively overrated films ever along with Kane IMO.
I struggle with foreign-language and B&W films to a degree, and the "hot damn" in the subtitles took me right out of the picture, but I still found it to be a very enjoyable film (and despite my issues with its format, vastly better than the English-lanaguage colour remake).

Picked up The Magnificent Ambersons today.

With a little willpower and a few quaaludes, that’ll bring my hall for this sale to the following:

Night of the Living Dead
Passion of Joan of Arc
Code Unknown
Branded to Kill
F For Fake
Sisters
Blow Out
Dressed To Kill
Yi Yi
The Magnificent Ambersons

Plus the following Arrow titles:

Deep Red
Re-animator
12 Monkeys
Blood and Black Lace

I would’ve bought The Bird With The Crystal Plummage today as well, but they wouldn’t sell it to for 50% off, because it was an online sale title only.

Sometime in a future Criterion is going to join the money train and release their titles on 4K.
I can easily mention hundred Criterion movie titles that would benefit from a 4K superior dynamic range.
It's not a question of if, it's a question of when.

In your opinion being the key part here. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, as I am entitled to mine. And it is my opinion that you’re out of your mind. Welles and Kurosawa are giants of the Twentieth Century, and Citizen Kane and Seven Samurai both deserve every single bit of prestige they have obtained over the decades since they were released.

You don’t have to like them, but don’t dump all over these masterpieces.

I’m watching Some Like it Hot this morning. Oh, God, how I love this film. I never get tired of it. Easily one of my most beloved comedies. And, pretty much a dream team, for me: Wilder, Lemmon, Curtis and Monroe. I know Marilyn exhibited her usual lack of reliability on set, but I watch this film, and can’t help but see the fun the actors had in their roles. Lemmon, especially was absolutely on fire.

The scene where the viewer first sees Lemon and Curtis hobbling towards the train in drag is one of the great moments in movie history. The sight gag never fails to make me laugh. And when Monroe swishes by the boys in drag, and Lemon describes her as, “Jello on springs”, I still guffaw. Every time. Hollywood just doesn’t come up with lines like that anymore.

I own the first blu, but I have to get the Criterion! I haven’t bought anything during the Barnes & Noble wale. I’m trying to be good, as I have a stack of unwatched Criterion’s yet. But, I think this is a fight I’m going to lose.
