After revisiting Peppermint Candy a couple months ago in the form of my miraculously-acquired South Korean blu-ray copy, and realizing what a total masterpiece it is, I've started buying Lee Chang-dong's other films on blu-ray – all of which I've seen over the years and are great. Today bought Secret Sunshine, and blind-bought Burning. I like to think interest in Burning might inspire a resurgence in interest/sales for Secret Sunshine, Criterion's one and only Korean release, and then maybe Criterion will consider doing more Korean releases. (Not that there's a dearth of Korean films on English-friendly blu-ray, thanks to imports, and labels like KOFA whose releases are 100% Criterion's equal...) It's an older title and I haven't seen anyone talking about it recently, but hey, it's sold out in the 12 hours since I ordered it, so I can't be the only one buying it today.

I've always personally felt Tarkovsky, Coppola and Von Trier were overrated, but hey, there are exceptions, and today they enter my collection. Actually, I previously thought Antichrist was a fluke, but after watching more of his later films recently, I've discovered I actually really like post-Dogme Lars Von Trier, and I'm particularly excited to rewatch Antichrist, since I think it may still be his best. (Also looking forward to having a chance to watch The House that Jack Built...)

I know most of the talk right now is the Flash Sale, but I wanted to see if anyone had thoughts on this:
For a long time Warner hasn't played nice with Criterion as far as licensing their titles. But New Line is (was?) owned by Time Warner, and with Hedwig and the Angry Inch coming in June, do we think that "might be the start of a beautiful friendship?" Granted Hedwig was technically Fine Line - New Line's "art/indie" division, but one can hope this leads to further WB titles that have been ignored getting the Criterion treatment.

Huh? Warner has been licensing movies to Criterion on a regular basis over the last 4 years or so.

To name a few:

The New World
The Magnificent Ambersons
A Face in the Crowd
Cat People
Day for Night
The In-Laws
Being There
The Asphalt Jungle

Really? I guess it's just none of the titles I've been buying! Even better. Thanks for the heads up.

Gilda
The Killing
Solaris
Sansho the Bailiff

Which 3 would you pick from these? I'll make my decision by the deadline but it would be cool to get some advice here. Thanks!

I almost didn't get anything this time around, but just pulled the trigger. I almost bought Mystery Train yesterday, but this morning it was OOS.

Went with:

Cut to: Smithereens is probably on the Criterion Channel today haha. Though from what I've read about it, I feel comfortable with this blind buy. Seems to be right up my alley

I wasn't going to participate in this sale but I'm weak. I placed an order this morning for:

Notorious
La vérité
Forty Guns

This will hold me over until the B&N sale in July.

Obligatory "sale haul" post. Went with a bit of a monochrome theme, if you will.

I know this might not be the "correct" place to ask this, but it doesn't seem like I'm going to get a response in The Criterion Channel's thread, so I'm going to ask it here before the flash sale ends today. Just going to copy and paste my original post...

This is going to probably be a really stupid question, but I never used FilmStruck, so I just wanted to make sure I understood everything correctly before signing up (and ultimately saving me a lot of money from buying their Blu-rays as much)... This will include all of their currently released catalog when it launches, and they will continue to add the ones they add to the Collection?

I was thinking the same thing! Seems a ton of people bought it this flash sale and yet it remains in stock. I didn't need it as it was a day one buy for me. One of my favorite movies of all time.

I was planning on sitting this one out, but temptation caused me to grab:
The Princess Bride
Sullivan's Travels - blind buy
Hopscotch - blind buy

Hopefully I'll enjoy those last two items!

I'm very proud of myself. Only spent $40 after gift cards and some cash I stashed away for the Bergman box when it was announced:

INGMAR BERGMAN'S CINEMA (BR)
The In-Laws
Short Cuts
Mikey and Nicky
Rashomon
McCabe & Mrs. Miller

That should keep my plenty busy until the next flash sale :P

Based on my past experience with FilmStruck, their lineup included about 3/4 of their entire catalog. Generally, this meant that most newer titles were excluded, although there were some exceptions. There were some older titles that weren't included and some newer ones that were. Mostly, I used it to watch classic foreign films (which I don't collect) and for their TCM content.

My expectation is that the Criterion Channel will include most, but not all, of the Criterion catalog, but who knows? I really wish they'd let people know what will be available before they go live.
