Rumour is that Criterion have the rights back to this one, so maybe hold on to it and if it is indeed back in print, ask for a replacement.

I think its safe to say that Criterion has it back as the KL Insider said it was one of the two films on the Melville Essential Collection set that they said they didn't have which leaves Criterion. I ended up getting that version as I couldn't wait any longer for these Melville films

OK ladies and gents I need some recommendations for some films. What are Criterion's best Noir's that I don't have? Also anything surrealistic, thriller, horror or comedy that I happen to not have? I have all my Criterion's in their own section on my profile. Thanks for the help!

I don’t think they even need the rights back to replace it. They were replacing Pierrot le Fou discs long after it went OOP. Contact them now and ask for a replacement. They might have some left.

What are they up to, #997? They could conceivably announce #998 and #999 along with 2-3 upgrades of older titles and an Eclipse set.

It's also Joe Weerasethakul's birthday today, just in case they were just holding the announcements back a day to announce #1000 Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives. :P

Kino was asked about Le Cercle Rouge, and replied saying they asked for that title and Army of Shadows but both went to another label. I think that's a pretty good sign that Criterion got these back, and will re-release them eventually.

Email Criterion about getting a replacement. They often accomodate if they can, even for OOP titles.

My disc of Le Cercle Rouge went bad a couple of years ago (started freezing at 1:51:16), I dropped a note to Mulvaney and replaced it, no problem.

Just realized that today's the 20th anniversary of Eyes Wide Shut's release. Wouldn't that be a nice surprise?

Now that would be an unexpected announcement and not really what would normally qualify as a Criterion title but I must admit I've always liked that film, much more so than any of his films he made after 2001 (with possible exception to Barry Lyndon).

You're right. Makes me wonder if that's the reason why Criterion is waiting until later today (hopefully) to announce the October titles.

Glad I opted to do yard work instead of waiting out the announcements, but I hope today's the day. Given the grail-like significance some are putting on this #1000, I'm hoping that it's Excalibur.

No matter what's announced as spine #1000, there are still going to be several people who will be unhappy about it. So in that case, I hope it's Kindergarten Cop.

Possible.

Another explanation is that yesterday was a holiday in Japan. If Criterion needed last minute clearance on something Godzilla related Toho may not have been in office.
