I think the sign of a truly great documentary is if you can be engrossed in it even if you have little to know interest in the subject matter.

Also i’m convinced that the Steve Buscemi character in Ghost World was loosely based on Robert Crumb.

...perhaps not even loosely.
I never tied both together but now it totally makes sense!

And the best thing is, both films are in the Criterion Collection (and I own them too).

On a tangential note, American Splendor (2003) would make a great addition to the Criterion Collection.

I may have up take a few discs out of my Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema preemptively after all, so that I won’t have to lift the whole box.
Maybe the same with The Herschell Gordon Lewis Feast box, since that will be an apt set of movies for the occasion.
I wish you the best of luck and a swift recovery!

All the best, young man. Sounds like you're going to have time to chip away at those perpetual stacks of films.

Ingmar Bergman and H.G. Lewis double features? Now THAT’S how to recover from surgery!

When Kino's rights to Mario Bava's movies expire, I do want Criterion to pick up the rights to them. Black Sunday needs a better US release if you ask me.

Though I admire Criterion as much as the next guy, when it comes to Mario Bava, I think Arrow getting the US rights would be simpler and more desirable in general. Their UK Bava discs are thoroughly packed with supplements, different versions and subs, to say nothing of quality PQ, AQ and subtitle translations.

Arrow said their rights to the Bava movies are expiring. So it's possible a similar thing will happen with Kino. Giving someone like Criterion a chance to grab the rights to them.

Positive energy your way. I’m having surgery in a couple of weeks as well, although it’s a little less invasive than yours appears to be. Western medicine excels at this type of procedure. I’m sure everything will turn out well

TCM just finished airing Haxan.

I gotta say, for a lurid tale of historical misogyny, it seems fitting that the last word shown on screen is "SLUT". I lol'ed

Quick question:

In Boston, where's the most reliable Barnes and Noble store with a decent stock of Criterion discs? Cheers!

Why can't I place an order online if one of the items is out of stock? What is this, 1999?

The only store in the city is in the Prudential Center. I used to shop there frequently and it always had an excellent selection - but I was last in there over a year ago, so can't speak to current stock.

I now live south of the city. If you can get to it, the biggest and best selection is at the Walpole location. A bit further south off Route 3, the Hingham store is also good.

I've been to the store in the Pru, and they indeed have a decent stock of Criterions. Helpful staff can order things for rapid in-store pickup as well.

Speaking of Barnes & Noble, will the July sale end on 7/31 or bleed a bit into August, as was the case last summer?

Hey All - got a question here about peoples’ experiences with experiencing manufacturers defects with Criterion’s.

A little background:
I recently picked up 17 titles on a shopping trip this past weekend to the states at B&N.

Last night I popped in Scanners and at the 23:55 mark it proceeded to glitch out. Luckily after about 30 sec or so, it skips to the next playable part. This disc’s only exposure was from case to player. I looked at the disc and noticed two minute scratches on the disc, which I gently used a microfibre cloth on - but no avail.

I played a couple discs afterwards, and then ejected them to look at the surface - perfectly clean. So, whew, not the player.

I’ve reached out to Criterion about a possible disc exchange, but I’m not holding my breath. I’ve done this since I am a Canadian, and don’t know B&N’s return / exchange policy for in-store purchases.

——
So, a tad unnerved at this one flawed disc, I checked all the discs I picked up. Three have somewhat of a physical mark on them - I’ll watch these this week to ensure they play properly. These are all titles released the past two years.

Now, I’ve been buying Criterion titles since 2011 and they have always been in perfect physical condition. The first disc with physical issues was the Police Story set. Scratches galore so I exchanged at amazon.ca, for not a perfect but near perfect set.

So what’s going on here? Has my luck run out or has the quality of manufacturing been affected? I’m prone to think the latter since there’s mention the manufacturer is now in Mexico...

Apologies for the long winded post, but I figured maybe there might be one or two people who might share similar experiences.

There was a huge issue with several Criterion titles having playback issues due to a 'bronzing' issue a few years back- might have something to do with that. You'll have to dig back into the thread to find all the info unless someone can provide specific page numbers etc. There were replacement discs being sent out.
