Uh, Netflix is now a studio. They shoot and produce films, and even develop some, not just buy them. That's what a studio does. Their movies play in theaters, if you somehow think that's what makes movies "movies."

It's cool if you live in the 90s, but that doesn't make it the current reality. You people who think streaming isn't the future have a VERY harsh reality coming, like it or not.

Quit pretending that Netflix isn't currently the place that film makers go to when they can't get money elsewhere.

Yes it's the 'future', but judging by the quality of most films produced there, the future either looks grim or we are currently in a state of transition, so there is no need to uncritically accept the 'current reality', since it is a mere preview.

Netflix has potential. Let's just wait and see whether that potential is realised instead of acting like anyone that questions the quality of what they are seeing is somehow stuck in the past.

Most Netflix original movies have been mediocre at best, but Roma was one of the best films last year (certainly better than Green Book), so the potential ceiling is high. I'm expecting The Irishman this year to be equally as good. However, Netflix is already self-sabotaging that film and its Oscar chances by refusing to give it a theatrical release.

The Irishman is getting a limited theatrical release in November.

As for the "Netflix movies don't count" thing, that's just sheer nonsense. The reason the likes of Gray and Dominik - and Scorsese, Cuarón, the Coens etc. - are working with Netflix is precisely because other studios aren't interested in producing or acquiring those projects. Why hold it against the filmmakers?

I read a recent interview with David Cronenberg in which he stated Netflix rejected a project he was developing for them. It didn’t sound completely dead but he wasn’t too optimistic. That just baffles me because you would think they'd let him do whatever he wanted considering his name recognition and accomplishments.

It sounded like the person was just wanting to push their anti Netflix agenda and just using Blonde as an example.

Is The Irishman getting a legitimate theatrical release, or just a few showings in NYC and LA?

"Limited theatrical release" is what it's being billed as. I'd expect something akin to Roma's release last year: start in NY and LA, expand to other cities leading up to the streaming drop with theaters showing it in theaters while it's available on streaming. I'm expecting the same for Marriage Story too.

The point was about Dominik's currency in Hollywood. He has little to none. That is clear.

Whether I lile Netflix or not is a peripheral concern.

Back to the thread. Criterion hope: California Split.

I'd love The Story of Temple Drake, and, as usual, not giving up on That Hamilton Woman!

I'm also wishing for a couple of restorations:

DEMENTIA 13 (Coppola/Zoetrope 4k restoration)
THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (Universal restoration for Venice Film Fest)

Not sure if you mean me, but I could have sworn I read an article that said The Irishman wasn't getting a theatrical release. Either the source I read was incorrect or I somehow missed the word "wide" in the headline "not getting a wide theatrical release." Glad to be wrong. No anti-Netflix agenda here (after all, I did say Roma was miles ahead of Oscar winner Green Book).

Netflix's decisions do continue to frustrate me and I've decided to drop my steady membership and just subscribe for 1-2 months out of the year, but I am not one of those Luddites who thinks a movie should be barred from winning an Oscar because it was made by a streaming company.
