I'm having a hard time deciding which director I should watch first:

Abbas Kiarostrami
VS.
Satyajit Ray

Who should I watch first?

I'm pretty sure I can handle slow cinema now since I watched Jeanne Dielman and all the Tarkovsky films already without losing attention too much (I dozed off on Ivan's Childhood and Andrei Rublev sadly. I will have to revisit them soon). But I much prefer the more influential or the more important director. So who should I watch first if I pretended to be someone who's new to world cinema (Even though I'm not but I would like to watch the easiest and better director first) Thanks in advance to those who reply to my question.

Nice pick ups! I'm grabbing Leave Her to Heaven as soon as the B&N sale hits. It's one of those films I've been meaning to see; I've got it on my DVR, and I'm going to watch it by the end of the weekend. I caught Dragonwyck a few days ago, which was Gene Tierney's film immediately after LHtH. Martin Scorsese said she may be the most underrated actress of the classic film era, and I wouldn't argue.

Really? The only 4K UHD I remember they released was Hannibal. I can't find any other releases that they did in 4K UHD.

Which part of having a 4K UHD release doesn't count as "going 4K" to you?

I don't think they fully went 4K. They only tried it once so I still think they haven't gotten into 4K. If they only did one, I guess they did go 4K partially but never cared for it. They're mostly doing their 4K restorations on Blu-rays still so. I still think they eventually will release a few more 4Ks at the end of the year so I guess they perhaps have gone 4K but surprisingly haven't done anything yet other than Hannibal. And no, Kino didn't go 4K ages ago, it was only last year (Hannibal 4K - May 07, 2019).

You could call it going to 4K already since they only did one but I still think they haven't fully adapted or had enough interest to fully go into 4K UHD.

They have four releases planned and are awaiting on a director or DP-approval for the master for at least one of them.

Well that explains it. Don't know what those 4 releases are but that probably does say Kino is ready for some 4K. That's good news to hear

Only kino knows what those 4 are, because they haven’t announced the titles yet.

Of course Kino has cancelled as many planned UHDs (Valkyrie and the Dollars trilogy[still annoyed at this one and I still don't have a 4K player]) as they still have planned, so it is a possibility that those planned titles don't pan out.

Kiarostami has been hit or miss with me and the better films I've seen by him (Close Up, Certified Copy) really aren't even close to Pather Panchali, The Music Room, etc.

Ray was a great screenplay writer and his gift for writing dialogue made even mundane subject matter interesting and highly accessible. He was a humanist, as well, so the films come off as more relatable to people from the western world than one might anticipate.

Pather Panchali is, for me, one of the best films I've seen in my lifetime.

It’s a matter of personal taste, but my own preference would be Ray. The Music Room is a masterpiece that transports you to a time and place that no longer exists. It’s such an immersive experience. As another member stated, Kiarostrami is kind of hit or miss. His film making is more intellectual in my opinion. Ray works more on the heart.

Well then by that definition no labels, including the major studios, have gone 4K yet.

I would call over a year "ages ago", relative to Arrow which went 4K last night.

Well I would say that your criteria shouldn’t be by who is the best director. They are both great directors. Instead, watch a film that piques your interest. Look at their body of work, or at least the ones you own, and watch it. But I do have to recommend The Apu Trilogy! It is one of my favorite films. Genuinely moving, beautifully photographed, and the music by Shankar. Phenomenal.

That’s an incredibly silly leap. Surely there is a difference between releasing one and releasing them every week?

Also a big Ray fan. Start with the Apu Trilogy, then check out Devi, Charulata, The Big City, The Music Room, etc.. All great films and essential cinema.

Literally nobody, including the major studios, is releasing 4K discs every week.
