I just looked at her IMDB page and didn't realize she was in so few films in her career.
I’m not a big Goldie Hawn fan, but my favorite film of hers is probably Jonathan Demme’s Swing Shift. Terrific cast. Don’t see it as a Criterion release, but who knows? Anyway, it’s a Warner film so WAC maybe.

You confused me there for a second, as WAC is releasing Night Shift, and it wasn't from Demme. Had to google it, and see it's Swing Shift.

Yeah, thanks for catching that. 1984’s Swing Shift.

For one, Mill Creek never, and I mean never, includes English Subtitles, which is a necessity for Deaf and Hearing Impaired people.

The poster specifically said "apparently the disc has audio and video issues". I'm curious what those are as well since I haven't purchased it yet.

Really? That news to me. Whenever I've looked to get something it didn't have subtitles.

Yep, you can check for yourself. They've definitely improved over the last year or two with providing subtitles.

Be that as it may, that release (Age of Consent / Cactus Flower) does not contain subs.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that it took so long for subtitles to be more standard. The same thing affects most of Kino's older releases too

So now that Mill Creek is fixing the subtitle issues I wonder how long it will be before they get around to improving PQ?

United Kingdom The Damned (1969, Luchino Visconti) transfer SUCKS!

Review of Criterion Blu-ray of The Damned:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-D...293164/#Review

This wasn't a Criterion restoration.

Quote:
"This 2K restoration was undertaken by the Cineteca di Bologna and Institut Lumiere from the 35mm original camera negative. A 1969 print was used as a reference for the color correction, and Daniele Nannuzzi, son of cinemaotgrapher Armando Nannuzzi, supervised the color. The original monaural soundtrack was remastered from a 35mm optical soundtrack positive."
Something went wrong here. The old Warner DVD has the right color timing and contrast, density. I wonder if the 35mm element at Warner USA is a 35mm inter-positive carefully timed in 1969 by Visconti and Nannuzzi. Criterion should recall the BD and go and scan that 35mm element stored at Warner in 4K and release a 2K and 4K package.

There is an illegal upload on YT of the Warner DVD that has been upscaled to 720p. It actually looks great, just needs a clean-up of the white specks. I'm guessing that you aren't allowed to do that, so I won't. So here is the DVD Beaver comparison of the Warner DVD and the original Italian DVD from Luce: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare2/damned.htm

The Italian DVD actually looks warmer than the Warner.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are that none of us knows what the “right” color timing is. Warner’s DVD has the familiar magenta bias that was so common years ago. And they aren’t going to recall a blu-ray because some people don’t like the colors on it.

It's not just the color grading that is a problem, it's the overall appearance. Cineteca di Bologna have bungled their "restorations" before, but this takes the cake. Criterion should always just do their own restorations if they can. Why was this restoration in 2K not 4K? I don't get why in 2021 we still see 2K scans of great films and immaculate 4K restorations of obscure low-budget horror films from the 80s. The future is 4K, it will be the norm in a few years.

This is very far from Cineteca di Bologna's worst efforts. Take a look at what they did to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for one.

Here are some of their other works, many of which are more offensive than The Damned: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=273492

Yes, they have made an arse of many films in their digital abomination restorations. You'd think that they would have learned from their mistakes. Getting the daughter of the film's cinematographer is pointless. What would she know? Would Vilmos Zsigmond's son know how Deliverance or The Long Goodbye is supposed to look? The Damned has an odd, garish, decadent look to it. Criterion should have passed on this master and just got the element that Warner used for the 2004 DVD and scanned it in 4K and that would look amazing. Nothing wrong with using a duplicate negative made from the original negative or a perfectly-timed inter-positive which hasn't faded. Sometimes using the original camera negative isn't the best choice if it is heavily faded even if you have an original print. Who knows what print they used for The Damned. Was it an unfaded IB Technicolor print?

These European companies who do digital restorations suck. Only the London, New York and L.A. people know what they are doing with classic films with problematic elements.

Criterion should recall this and do a new 4K restoration of the Warner elements and release a 2K/4K (100 GB disc) double-pack.

Daniele Nannuzzi is a cinematographer (DP on Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre) and was even camera assistant for his father on a lot of films, including Visconti's Ludwig.

Just as valid as getting Michael Chapman to consult on Klute because he was camera operator for Gordon Willis.
