This is what I came up with. I'm not sure which of these would count as "Hollywood." I've listed each director with their earliest feature narrative film in that decade.
  • Barbara Loden - Wanda - 1970
  • Barbara Peeters - Caged Desires 1970
  • Stephanie Rothman - The Student Nurses 1970
  • Elaine May - A New Leaf 1971
  • Stephanie Sebastian - The Hitchhikers 1971 (co-directed with Ferd Sebastian)
  • Joan Micklin Silver - Hester Street 1975
  • Joan Darling - First Love 1977
  • Claudia Weill - Girlfriends 1978
  • Jane Wagner - Moment By Moment 1978
  • Joan Rivers - Rabbit Test 1978
  • Karen Arthur - The Mafu Cage 1978
  • Joan Tewkesbury - Old Boyfriends 1979

Some of these were independents (although I still think of them as Hollywood even if they weren't for major studios), so I'm not sure which four Criterion was referring to.

Jumpscares will be the least of your worries.

Although there definitely are a couple of good, sudden shocks.

Mulholland Drive features the only jump scare to literally make me jump out of my seat. Then I watched the movie again and it still scared me and then I went back and framed by framed the DVD to see what came out from behind the dumpsters.

I would think that the four are:

Joan Tewkesbury
Elaine May
Jane Wagner
Joan Micklin Silver

As far as Hollywood studio films from the era.

According to the above article, The Criterion Collection is supporting with the restoration of Bimal [Roy] films (Devdas and Madhumati). Reportedly, these films were taken to a restoration laboratory in Italy’s Bologna.

This article also mentions that, early this year, Criterion Collection restored ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, ‘Bandini’, ‘Madhumati’ and ‘Devdas’ at their own expense.
That's exhilarating news. If they do a Bimal Roy boxset, it would be an amazing showcase of what mainstream Hindi cinema was at one point of time.

Of course, they will first have to take some effort on creating a buzz around Bimal Roy. Satyajit Ray and Ritwick Ghatak's films are more known among western arthouse audiences. But in many ways, Bimalda's style is related to theirs, and they all drew to varying extents from the Italian Neo-realism movement, so hopefully this will find an appreciative audience.

I love how I (and most likely others) didn't even have to read any further and we all knew the moment you were talking about. Love that damn movie.

Hey everyone! I haven't been around here for years. Slowly getting back into blu-ray collecting, and noticed that Pierrot le Fou is no longer OOP, but has new artwork? I'm sure it's probably been discussed, but I don't feel like going through 10,000+ pages of chatter to find the discussion. Haha.

So, is there really anything different between the two editions?

The first time I saw that I showered everyone around me with popcorn. It scared me so much that I came out of my seat.

I think the only change is the colour tint in the party scene but I don’t think there’s a consensus on which is correct.

The re-release also uses the newer 2K scan that features on StudioCanal's blu-ray (not a huge difference, though) and has a fixed day-for-night filter on one shot that was missing on the old restoration.

Roger Ebert's 1966 review says that the green tint on the shot in the party scene wasn't there, but Coutard approved the version that had the green tint, so

Is Criterion done with classic samurai films? Toho has a whole slew of them from the 50s.

They don't seem to have released a load of Kurosawa titles that do have a Japanese BD - Sanshiro Sugata, Stray Dog, Red Beard etc

Those releases don't have great transfers though. Some of those definitely need newer scans and extensive restorations.

More grist for the "Criterion release" mill: Sabotage (1936) (D: Hitchcock) and The Seventh Veil (S: Ann Todd, James Mason). Both Criterion titles are currently streaming on HBO Max. The Seventh Veil has never had so much as a DVD anywhere according to this site, and Sabotage has never had a US disc. Both could use a good restoration. The Seventh Veil won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay so it wasn't a totally obscure title at the time of its release, and of course Hitchcock is Hitchcock.

Which is what Criterion used to be all about.

Not really. They have done, and still do restoration work, but like most boutique labels, they are still predominantly a licensor of films and their respective restorations, which are carried out by studios and restoration houses. It would be primarily up to Toho to do new scans and restorations for the films. Hell, even when Toho has done new restorations, like in the case of some Godzilla films, they didn't allow Criterion to use them. Toho are one of the hardest studios to deal with.

Criterion has a ton. My most wanted is Hunter in the Dark, but I've pretty much given up any hope. Samurai Rebellion is one that I think has a realistic chance of getting a release.

That's a good one! I'd love to see Goyokin, Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji, The Loyal 47 Ronin, and Black Cat Mansion.
