I keep forgetting about that: "Six-disc set (3 BD-100, 3 BD-50)".
EDIT: I can't count

Yes, they always do that. Like every single Bergman title has its own cover online, but they were all just in a book in slots in the actual box set.

I’ve said before that even the reeds are ominous. The wind makes them look like fingers beckoning the Samurai in. Like the sand in Woman In the Dunes, the reeds become another character in the film.

Price mistake, Amazon just dropped Fantastic Mr Fox Blu-ray to $14.99. They are matching B&N's DVD price, not the Blu-ray

FYI, it's back again right now for $14.99

I picked it up yesterday.

Hoping Amazon will do this to more Criterion titles in the future. The two Wes Anderson titles that I have in my library so far were because of Amazon bringing down the price for a few minutes (Bottle Rocket for $12 was still the best deal I've seen for a Criterion Blu-ray so far)

That whole environment looks like it's alive. What a great idea it was to film it in that location. It's like one large Venus Flytrap.

Love to see a place like that still exist. it wouldn't surprise me if they had to whittle the footage down from 6 hours to 21 minutes

I'm a huge fan of Criterion picture selection, art direction and reprographics in their booklets/packaging over the years like thousands of others but the pictures selected for those five sleeves are poor choices I think.

I don't save money with Criterion's sales. I buy more movies than I would than if they just kept the prices reasonable*, because of the short window that makes them more desirable. It's a ploy.

*NOT reasonable being $40 for every movie and $50 for every UHD. Get outta here!

You raise a good point. It might make some ppl buy one they have limited interest in out of impulse or FOMO. I don’t. I ain’t buying After Hours(it was okay) or the Pasolini set(not really a fan). One False Move was pretty solid, I might get that at some point.

I never understood why anyone would get FOMO, or any sort of impulse to buy as many Criterion titles as possible during a sale. The B&N sales have been happening twice a year for well over a decade, and Criterion titles aren't limited, so why would there be any panic buying? When you factor in Criterion's own 50% off sales, that's four different opportunities to get them half-off in a year. Calling it a "ploy" is like calling any sale in existence a "ploy". You mean the goal is to increase the volume of sales with a discounted price? You don't say

The bottom line is, these sales aren't going anywhere, no one has a gun to anyone's head forcing you to spend more, or buy titles you don't want to own. Saying you're not saving money because you're buying more during a sale than you would if they didn't exist makes no sense. If you wanted the titles then you're more or less getting the lowest price possible for them. If you didn't actually want the titles, then why are you buying them?

I can’t believe Criterion turned out to be so underhanded they’d have sales… *shudder*

At least it's not like Amazon's BS, where prices go up and down like a hoor's knickers as they say in Ireland.

Criterion

Sales don't tempt me nearly as much as in the past. If there's a movie I want to own and watch very soon then I buy it, sale or not (e.g. Double Indemnity UHD was a day 1).

There's quite a few CC UHDs I'd like to own but if I purchase several in a sale, there's an excellent chance I'm not going to watch all of them in a week or even a month.

On the other hand, a new pair of Saucony running shoes is going to get plenty of use and serves me better for the present (Although, unlike a movie, I'll eventually have to toss the shoes).

Some potentially good news coming by way of international releases.

First, Le Samourai will be getting an international 4K release from Pathé in November. Criterion worked on the restoration with Pathé, so we can expect a 4K release from them as well.

Next, Peeping Tom (1960) will be coming to 4K from Studio Canal, also tentatively in November. Very strong chance of this one getting a 4K release from Criterion as well.

Wonder if we can expect a Powell/Pressburger 4K set in the near future (2024)? I haven't bought any of his films yet but I'm probably just going to wait for the 4K releases of the other ones first (If they aren't released individually, then maybe a boxset could be expected) before I start buying their films.
