Among the titles I decided to get in the recent VS Labor Day weekend sale was Lust in the Dust (one of the reasons I've been wanting to get a copy of Lust in the Dust was because of the part-spaghetti western theme). Eventually, when there is another Criterion UK sale (ideally on HMV's website), among the titles I want to get is another film where Tab Hunter and Divine starred together in, Polyester.

Have not seen Red Shoes but have heard it's a great film. That would be great if there is a sale over in the UK for you!

They've been starting on Fridays the last few years, so I suspect the 3rd might have a better chance.

Coming on the heels of Kojima and Corman's Closet Picks, this series is really getting interesting lately. Is Bresson's Pickpocket Blu-ray still in print? Only DVD offered on website. If it was one of their dual format only titles which they're retiring while they prepare their one disc release like with Tie Me Up Tie Me Down then it'll be back.

Adding all of my new Criterion movies to the database and I'm noticing a lot of 'official' blu-ray scores that are pretty low (3 or 4 stars). The technical scores are all really high, but then the total score is low. All from the same user.

It's like:

Visuals 5/5
Audio 5/5
Extras 4/5

Total Score: 3/5

????

That's total garbage. Why are personal opinions on the movie itself deciding the official release score? Should be based on technical scores only, no?

Totally agree. Also it seems the total is not an average of the individual scores - why is that?

Since Luis mentioned Spartacus.....Kubrick came in late because Anthony Mann the original director was fired by producer Kirk Douglas. I kind of understand why Kubrick didn't want his name on the picture, and made sure he had full creative control of any film he made thereafter.

The Dalton Trumbo commentary (not his voice but based on notes he took) reveals a lot. For example. there's a scene where Batiatus overrides Marcellus and says that Varinia should be given to Spartacus for the night. Is it a favor, giving her to Kirk Douglas? It makes no sense. In the original script, Varinia was being uppity, so Batiatus gave her to Spartacus the brute so he would rape her and subdue her. But Peter Ustinov wanted his character to be a lovable old teddy bear, the acceptable face of slavery, so he had some scenes rewritten, I assume over Kubrick's objections.

With The Killer now out, I'm hoping it gets a release from Criterion, but then I remembered we still don't have Mank on disc. Really surprised that hasn't happened yet.

Agreed. I expected Mank to enter the Criterion Collection. It could still happen and get a 4K UHD disc release.

I mean we've been waiting patiently for Panic Room and that still is out so my hope for Mank (and the Killer) is low.

I do hope it happens though.
