Any differences in terms of PQ, AQ, and special features between the Criterion 4K and the Columbia Classics 4K?

The joy of having pets. My bird chews any paper near him and bites whoever he can. He think he’s a big bad guy at only four inches tall.

Worse though is my dog, who destroyed my copy of Gone With The Wind right as all the BS surrounding that movie happened a few years ago. Wasn’t fun trying to replace it either.

Two unrelated questions:

1. Any opinions on the Criterion Blu of La Cérémonie? A certain reviewer has given the disc his smear of disapproval, and I figured what better place to go than the forums.

2. Do we know whether Criterion has a new deal with Paramount or somehow got the old deal back up and running? Users here are beginning to speculate that a certain Paramount title is coming from Criterion, but I haven’t seen anything to indicate that a deal even exists. (Plus it’s a notoriously bogged down title, so it’s not something Criterion could just take on like it’s any other movie.)

PJ's waiting for even stronger DNR to be invented because someone might still be able to tell they were shot on film if he released them now.

I just bagged Panic Room and Braindead/Dead Alive on tape. Panic Room is 1.78:1, but I don't know if it's pan-and scan or open matte. Braindead says Unrated and 97 minutes, but the tape is a T-115 (long enough to hold the actual uncut version), while the rest were all T-97 tapes. Probably won't get lucky, but one can only hope.

Does anyone know if there's any place to find the 104-minute cut of Braindead? I know the shorter 97-minute cut is Jackson's preferred Director's Cut, but the uncut version is just so much more appealing.

For real. LOTR was a shitstorm. It's a shame the Atmos was so great (especially on TROTK), and I can't name any one release where the picture and sound are at such polar opposite ends of the spectrum.

Get Back, on the other hand, actually looked good to me. I don't know why. It didn't look waxy and DNR'd at all.

Jackson and Cameron are the only two guys on earth who think waxing the films over makes them look better. I don't know what's in the water in New Zealand, but it got to both of them.

With the recent 4Ks of American Graffiti and The Exorcist, Lucas and with his dying breaths Friedkin turned to the wax side too.

It's 2023. The animus towards DVD-like presentations is well documented. Why keep doing it? How many times do they have to be told "you're not making it better, you're making it worse" before they get it?

The exorcism scenes looks like bad YouTube rip. It's unbelievable that product was allowed to make it to market in 2023.

I've been watching and enjoying the Robert Bresson feature on Criterion Channel and I was thinking of picking up the available Criterion blu-rays while the sale is still happening, but I am hesitating because I am wondering if Criterion might release a Bresson box set in the future.

Not sure it would be as comprehensive as, say, the Bergman box, but with the Pickpocket Blu/DVD set being out of print and Diary of a Country Priest on the Channel looking to be a fairly recent 4K restoration from StudioCanal, I am wondering if it's better to wait...

I wouldn't hold my breath for a box set, but I would be concerned with possible 4K upgrades. I'm in a similar situation now with David Lynch and Orson Welles. Hell, the David Lynch stuff is already even restored in 4K.

My patience has expired. I demand Criterion release Zabriskie Point in 4k or your planet will be destroyed!

Ah, I don't know, I always bounce off this kind of reasoning. I mean, the number of absolutely unrealistic things we tolerate in, say, a SF film like sound in space for the sake of artistic or emotional conceits? It's just staggering. But something like people singing and moving, well my god, HOW FAKE IS THAT? We've come to a weird place in the culture.

That 3 disc special edition Sony released, back when studios cared about supplements, was STACKED. I hope all those extras and commentaries makes it to an eventual blu-ray/4k release

The movie looks awful, though, even by DVD standards.

I am pleased to report that my Dietrich/von Sternberg set arrived in beautiful condition today.
