I remember seeing him live on stage at a university back in the 90s (I've seen him speak live several times), and he brought along a stack of Laserdiscs from his personal collection that he wanted to talk about, and a couple of VHS tapes. It was a wild, eclectic batch, too.

I remember he talked about Scorsese's "Taxi Driver", Kubrick's "Spartacus", Richard Lester's "Help!" (yes, with The Beatles), and Tarkovsky's "Solaris" on discs, and I remember he held up a VHS tape of "Roma" and talked a bit about Fellini. He said "Roma" was the first Fellini he ever saw, while in film school (this speech was shortly after Fellini had passed away). He also gushed about Tarantino, whose "Pulp Fiction" had just won the Palme d'Or, recently. (That was before he and Tarantino had a falling out a couple of years later).

But, anyway, yeah, I suspect that if he was in the Closet at Criterion, he'd have a lot to talk about. Though he might not take many, as he probably would already have them, LOL.

He's a film geek just like the rest of us.

He's an interviewee on several Criterion releases, including "The Battle of Algiers".

There's another vid of him praising "On the Waterfront" and "A Face in the Crowd".

Those two films were written by Budd Schulberg, who Spike knew, and Schulberg had written a screenplay called, "Save Us Joe Louis" , about the boxer, and Lee wanted to make a film of it, but it never came together.

Speaking of Spike Lee, while not regarded as one of his finest works, I would love to see Da 5 Bloods on Blu-ray. I really enjoyed that one.

Lee has said he was thrilled to be produced by Scorsese, and directing Harvey Keitel. Scorsese made "Casino", Lee made "Clockers".

Both were vastly underrated at the time of their release (they were event movies for me back in 1995), but "Casino" has seen some re-assessment over the years, but "Clockers" is sadly largely forgotten. Both were great, I thought.

It appears that automated scratch/debris removal has led to disappearance of a coin being dropped in a scene. But this may be baked into the restored master, so not clear at this moment if any individual label can correct it (or maybe Criterion can add back the coin drop with a bit of CG, similar to how they generated new text for their alternate English presentation of Vampyr)

If we're talking Spike Lee and Criterion, I've wanted 25th Hour for ages.

The twofer disc with He Got Game has long been OOP, and I think it'd be a perfect CC inclusion.

I saw Spike Lee interviewing Scorsese at a film symposium Lee used to host on Saturday mornings at Long Island University's auditorium in Brooklyn NY back in 1993. A wonderful conversaion

"Clockers" is such a great film, one of Spike's best IMO. Delroy Lindo's performance in that film is truly masterful and terrifying, but great performances throughout the film as well. Definitely one of Richard Price's best scripts too.

25th Hour is also high on my wants list. Rewatched the DVD back end of last year. It was still as good as I remembered.

"25th Hour" is so damn good, and the immediate post 9-11 setting in New York setting is incredibly vivid. Norton, PSH, Rosario Dawson and Barry Pepper are all at near career-best levels IMO in this film (for PSH, that was every role, to be fair). Also, throw in Brian Cox to the mix in a typically great turn as Norton's father. Spike has a lot of bangers, but "25th Hour" is near the top.
