It's almost certain that Criterion makes more money during the July and November sales than they do any other period of the year. There is a reason they've made those their biggest months for titles. So no, the sales aren't going anywhere.

Not sure where else to put this, but having just watched IMO one of the greatest war movies on TCM, with a nice restoration, I'm shocked to see that this is not available on BD.

I agree 100%, William Wellman was a really good director. 'Heaven Knows, Mr Allison' also with Mitchum, also needs an upgrade.

Peeping Tom didn't do well at the time because Powell's film was 20 years ahead of 1960 audience sensibilities. People thought Psycho, in which all the violence is suggested (Martin Balsam staggering down the stairs) or edited so well you never actually see Janet Leigh being stabbed, was too violent. By comparison Peeping Tom is a kick in the face to squeamish folks.

I know this is a total fantasy due to rights squabbles on some titles, but I'd like to see Criterion show some love to more great horror movies, like the original Dawn of the Dead. Blood on Satan's Claw, Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Stepford Wives, etc.

Regarding the July sale (if it happens under the New Management-yes, that's a Laundry Files reference)

“The young people of today don’t appreciate great horror movies.”

“This great horror movie wasn’t appreciated by the people of its day.”

Literally within two sentences of each other.

Absolutely. I have the DVD which looks okay for an old flick in SD, but gotta have war pics in HD. Great stuff. Mitchum was Oscar nominated for it.

I did not write either of those previous sentences, so I'm unsure who you are attempting to argue with. As I said, I disagree with the first statement, as many acclaimed horror films from studios like A24 and Blumhouse have found commercial success and an audience.

The second statement is factual - Peeping Tom was a commercial failure upon its initial 1960 release in the US and UK, and this effectively ended director Michael Powell's career. However, the film later gained renewed appreciation over the course of a generation.

People are calling out his "kids these days" sentiment, that's all.

Any age or era is allowed to like it, but only the ones with taste will.

And that includes most of us.

This might be the greatest Mandela effect in film history. To this day, even when I tell people who’ve seen the film repeatedly that there’s no actual contact, they still insist they “saw” her get visibly stabbed, despite the fact that that was never shot, never planned to be shot, never scripted, never edited out. Yet we all can still visibly see the murder happening.

It’s been frequently called the greatest murder in film history, and rightly so.

Not really news per se, but yesterday afternoon in Cleveland, I attended a special 25th anniversary screening of Election with director Alexander Payne in attendance for a Q&A. The 4K DCP looked amazing.

I asked him about the possibility of a restoration of Citizen Ruth, and he said that while there are currently no plans for a restoration, he would love to work with Criterion on a new edition if they were interested (he noted that he worked with Criterion on Election). He said that the audio on one of the original positives for Citizen Ruth had deteriorated quite a bit, and that he would love to see it restored.

As I was reading this, I was hoping you also asked about a 4K of Sideways.

Guess I'll just have to drown my sorrows in wonder....

Got 6 titles from Amazon delivered today. Poor Yi Yi and La Llorona have to go back, they have some nasty scratches.

Expecting another 4 directly from Criterion today too; fingers crossed for scratch free discs!

It doesn't sound like he's working with Criterion on anything currently, but I too would love to see a release of Sideways. (I doubt that Disney would release it themselves)

Cheers for the reply. Hopefully Sideways finds a way to get some 4K love. Such a good film.

Saw the discussion about The Story of G.I. Joe in the ClassicFlix thread last year and it looks like there are/were some copyright issues. The film has recently been added to several streaming platforms, though. Hopefully that indicates a physical release is also coming soon!

There's a Twilight Time release for Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison but that's (unsurprisingly) sold out a long time ago... Park Circus lists a 4K DCP, so I'd really love to see a new Blu-ray (or a 4K UHD!) release.

I just noticed that Janus also updated their website to include Anatomy of Hell and Sex Is Comedy.

These pages are still offline, but they could very well be more Breillat.
