I'm ready for a blu-ray or 4K UHD upgrade of
John Huston's Under the Volcano (1984).

Criterion

It's fun to speculate which month Criterion would release a UHD of Seven Samurai (the first movie that comes to mind when i think of Criterion).

My first guess without checking the archives is that it's a Q4 film. The release history of the movie does not have much of a pattern for months:

DVD 1998 - April
DVD 1999 - March
DVD 2006 - Sept
BLU 2010 - Oct

I'm guessing that it will be out in October or November. Like you said, Q4 makes the most sense.

Also, I love the new poster for the re-release.

The big titles in June/July and October/November didn't really become a thing until the B&N 50% off sales became a thing.

Only 26 days to go. 26 long days until
Pat Garret and Billy the Kid is released.

Yes so excited for this I cannot believe it’s coming out in less than a month this year has had some great titles coming out on Blu-Ray, and 4K UHD plus much more weird, and unique titles too like Gung-Ho, Mother, and Real Life.

If not the boxset maybe we will get individual releases, which I would be more than fine with (the boxset would have horrible packaging). Maybe a 4k boxset just isnt financially viable or maybe they think they could milk more money releasing individual films.

I am looking to get a boxset and I was wondering what box set from Criterion has the most bang for the buck? The only one I have from Criterion is the Godzilla one.

I hope we get a new Pedro Almodóvar movie announced, specifically Talk to Her and Bad Education.

It’s a little pricey, but the Bergman set is great value.

I believe all that remains, not including WCP releases, are:

The Long Day Closes
Jules and Jim
A Brief History of Time
The Great Beauty
The Freshman
Master of the House
Il Sorpasso
Like Someone in Love (this film is only listed as DVD on CC website now.)

The Fellini set is so much bigger than I thought. It’s like a monolith on my shelf.

The Zatoichi Box is really beautiful. The Tati box is more cardboard like, but is well worth the purchase.

The Complete Films of Agnes Varda. Yes, Ingmar Bergman's Cinema has more films and is bigger, but the Varda box is incredible because it's her entire filmography in one place.... there's not a single dud. I also like how it's way more compact. I'd like to imagine Varda saw the behemoth that was the Bergman box and pleaded for them to make something more carry-able for her's.

We already knew Criterion was releasing Sean Baker's first three flicks, and it looks like Four Letter Words is coming early 2025 https://x.com/rarefilmm/status/17996...Q0yZlliLA&s=19

EDIT: In the replies he says Prince of Broadway is also coming early 2025!

Tends to get overlooked, but the Pierre Etaix set is a pretty good value. Has 8 of his films, 5 features and 3 shorts (I think some TV movies and episodes are the only things not included.)

Is it worth getting the Three Colors trilogy in 4K if I already have the blu-ray set?
