But if it's after Kino's license expires, then maybe Criterion will release these UHDs but I have a feeling these won't be coming out for a while regardless.
Thanks for the reply. I was curious about this because of those cases you mentioned of Criterion releasing a blu-ray and Kino upgrading it to UHD.

Patton wrote an excellent book called Silver Screen Fiend about his love for/addiction to movies, especially focusing on his obsession with catching everything he could at the New Beverly. Very insightful and highly recommended.

Yes The Year of Living Dangerously really deserves a Blu-Ray I have a strong feeling Criterion has it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we get this title in December, or most likely next year. That titles on my wishlist it needs to happen so bad.

Rather than getting upset with them scoring freebies due to their "status," I'm more curious why they go off on hugely enthusiastic and energetic cheerleading for recommending movies and yet they don't already own said movies? Are they only worth getting for free?

Two Yorgos Lanthimos' films on UHD: The Favourite and Poor Things.
I predict these two movies in particular WILL be released by Criterion and not be a pipe dream or represent anyone going bonkers.

Why?

Because they and the director SOUND like Criterion titles more than any of the other ones you predicted!

It doesn't make sense to assume net worth or personal lifestyles of people we don't even know.
Oh I think this sounds like a pretty roundabout way to defend celebrities you don't personally know.

If all that you say is true, why is it any different when they then take the physical media for free? How does that work with all their "space limitations, not living in one place for long periods, or other practical reasons?"

I also don't think it makes sense to assume anything about personal lifestyles of people we don't even know, let alone offer them excuses, but that's what you did.

It's up to you if you want to assume the worst about artists who love Criterion, just based on their visit to the closet. Artists also make donations for auctions for charity etc, so I personally wouldn't assume they all keep what they grab or display in the videos. I find it odd that we can't just enjoy their stories or anything positive anymore because we assume everyone is a terrible person. I've enjoyed all the closet videos I've watched, even of people I didn't know or weren't that interested in their own work.
Wow. You are reading way too much into this and weirdly seeming to take it personally that someone might be pointing out an obvious irony to these videos featuring some celebrities. I asked a perfectly legitimate question, but instead of trying to answer it, you are taking detour after detour trying to defend celebrities or pandering to the celebrity worship that is way too prevalent in our culture today.

Either way, calm down, nobody is crucifying these people or their personal habits or trying to turn a positive into a negative. I think you are more frustrated not by my question, but simply because I may not share your apparent eminent and unconditional respect for these "strangers" just because they are celebrities. In the end, I don't care why they are there or why they are taking any movies, I just don't get why they offer up heaps of praise for what they are taking and yet it never occurred to them to reinforce that before by putting money where there mouths are.

EDIT TO ADD: You are the second new member of this forum who has just joined this month and come after one of my posts with a pretty bluntly ridiculous couterpoint. Or maybe you are the same one? I can't remember, but if this is all just a sock account to bust my balls, own up to it, man. I'll gladly be called paranoid now.

To be clear, the "pipe dream" in my list was all those titles coming out at once in a single month, not any of the individual films coming out at all. I believe at least nearly all titles I mentioned will be released by Criterion on UHD throughout the years for the rest of the decade.

I think you're right we will get all of them at some point eventually. The Fox stuff though might wait longer

To be clear from my end: I was poking fun that Criterion often releases foreign titles by directors with unusual sounding names and that of all the ones you posted, those two stood a better chance than the rest of coming out. It was not any commentary on your time frame or idea that they would all come out together at the same time.

Here’s what it is for me. They’re ambassadors for the film industry, or should be. There are a LOT of people in the industry who have no respect for film history; there are a lot of them in the business for the buck. When you see people at the top of their career arc and talk about their *emotional* connection - I don’t care about their free discs. They are bringing value to film. Seeing Channing and Zoe rave about A Woman Under the Influence and Harlan County USA and Paris is Burning? That breaks open these titles for a new generation. Some TikToker is gonna stop and say, huh, that’s interesting.

There are really few things I love more than seeing a working professional discuss the ART of that business. So if they wanna take those discs home, put them on the shelves, give them to friends, I don’t know - I don’t resent it. I think it’s a service.

(At the Oscars, I would be WAY more happy if all the presenters got a tote bag of Criterions than a lifetime supply of lamb placenta skin moisturizer or whatever. )

What we really need is the original cut of Shadows that Ray Carney discovered. She was the only one blocking its release, even threatening to seize the copy and destroy it.

Zero noticeable screenshot upgrades.

This leads me to believe that if they upgrade a title, it'll be one that has already undergone a 4K restoration and been released on BD.

Otherwise, I'm going to assume that all of the releases will be new entries. (Unless they really just haven't started to update their site yet.)

I just noticed this article and well it’s very interesting about blaxploitation films including premieres of Coffy, Foxy Brown, and Black Caesar which has me thinking this at the moment. Is a blaxploitation box set from Criterion coming out in the near future like say next year?

https://www.criterion.com/current/po...loitation-baby

I could definitely see it since Kino, Arrow, and MVD won’t touch this genre very much I could see Criterion doing it. They already did Shaft so I could see Black Caesar, Foxy Brown, and Coffy 4Ks in the near future which sounds crazy. They just posted this article August 13th so they definitely have a huge interest in blaxploitation films.
