Yep, they do. It had it's NA premiere at the New York Film Festival last year, and also screened elsewhere after, courtesy of Janus Films.

Earlier today I watched “I Know Catherine, the Log Lady” about the late, great Catherine Coulson and clips were shown from some Cassavetes films, like Opening Night and Chinese Bookie. What threw me off though was in the credits, the clips from these films are attributed to Shout Factory not Criterion or Janus. Did they lose them and Shout pick them up?

Finally watching my Melvin Van Peebles collection, which I've had forever.

Watched Story of a Three-Day Pass, which is downbeat, but jazzy and neat production. For some reason I thought Harry Bellafonte was the star, so when it started I was like gee he looks a lot younger. The actual star Harry Baird does a very good job.

I was in the Army in late 80s/90s, and the racial premise might not have happened, but if you make it a gay soldier and a secret Paris hookup, yes, that series of events felt relevant to that later era (and today I'm sure). I'd like to think I would have minded my own business instead of being a buddyf*ker like some of the white soldiers in the movie.

I really liked seeing some of the directorial choices like the double dolly and spinning POV, and Van Peebles was on top of his game. Picture looks mostly great, with a few soft focus places, but overall solid appearance and quality.

Shout Studios now owns the Westchester Films and Jumer Films libraries, which include all of Cassavetes' self-produced films. Shout actually licenses out to other companies frequently, though it's been a while since Criterion has handled a Westchester title.

Jumer also owns Elaine May's Mikey and Nicky, which Criterion released on Blu.

Often associated with the later "Vertigo", "Él" also plays in that same realm of male obsession and psychosis, paranoia and cuckoldry, and also religious ritual as fetishism as "Eyes Wide Shut". A double-bill in November is a must here at Chez Lurker, where kinky religiosity and studies in abnormal psychology are almost invariably the touchstones of great cinema.
Thanks for your insight. I never saw Él, so this will be a curious viewing for me when I get around to it.

I haven't been on here in nearly a week but I'm glad that theaterdreamer is back. We are both Facebook friends and I have been following his posts and love for films and sports from time to time. It's been a crazy year for him, but myself as well (in other ways).

One of my favorite movies, but it’s tough to beat that Kino release that includes a BD with the two sequels.

Criterion helped me reappraise Terry Gilliam's films--for the better.

Now I own all of his films(except Fear and Loathing, that one I cannot warm up to).

As visual experiences, his films are in elite, vivid territory.

If you're looking for first- rate storytelling, you won't find it(except for 12 Monkeys, which I don't know if it's first rate, but it's his most conventional movie with a streamlined plot which most of his movies don't have, at least not really).

I blind bought that last year and really enjoyed it and echo that Qualley is fantastic in it.

I watched Love and Basketball. It first started as a generic love story between two characters happening over time and quickly turned into something much more interesting. It felt much more thoughtful and grounded than the typical rom-com of that time. All the characters felt very grounded and fleshed out, and the actors played them very well. I liked in the supplements when the writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood said she was asked, “Do you want to make a basketball movie with a love story in it or a love story with basketball in it”. I think she made the correct decision by having it mainly be about the love story.

I also appreciated that the female lead stood up for herself throughout the film. An early example is when she called out the hypocrisy of the gender gap early in the movie where she talked about getting a technical foul for playing physically when the male would get praise for it.

There were scenes where major character shifts happen without anyone saying anything about it, and it works because they wrote it so well it is inferred.

Overall a very good and compelling story taken from the director’s experiences that was written and directed wonderfully.

A couple of things...

1. The older I get, the more I believe that the two John Hughes screenplay/production teen movies that were directed by Howard Deutch, Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful, completely and utterly destroy the teen movies that were actually directed by Hughes.
I am still all in for the upcoming Criterion 4K of The Breakfast Club, though.

2. I have always been an enthusiastic devotee of Jamie Lee Curtis, from her horror movie roles onward. Her recent Criterion Closet video, however, was one of the most insufferable things that I have viewed in recent memory. It was a fun video early on, but went off the rails.
