I'd forgotten about that one. But ya, I suppose Criterion never has a realistic chance at getting that film in their collection. I think it did well in theatres and is more mainstream than his past works.

My personal favorite Luis Buñuel in the Criterion Collection is a toss-up between "That Obscure Object Of Desire" and "Diary Of A Chambermaid." I wish that "Simon Of The Desert" had the finances to be finished, as well.

Other than "Belle de jour," I haven't seen any Buñuel films outside the Criterion Collection, so if you have any suggestions, CG, feel free to unload them on me.

CC
I like your choices. I was wondering if someone else liked Diary Of A Chambermaid. No baiting. Just wanted to know some opinions.

Have you ever seen Un chien andalou? It's on Auteurs for $1.

I enjoyed "Viridiana", "The Phantom of Liberty", "The Milky Way", "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie". I also enjoyed "Simon of the Desert" and one of the titles that is not only cheap but easily accessible.

L'Age d'or from Kino is essential and definitely a controversial film.

And if you enjoyed Bunuel's work, you will like the upcoming "Oshima Outlaw Sixties" Eclipse Series as the master of surrealism was a major influence to Oshima.

2. I can go right now and get a film like Darjeeling Limited or Thin Red Line at any store around me. No need for a Criterion release then, right?

The only ones who want those Wes Anderson movies are just in it for the "Criterion" name. If they were not, then they would be happy with the other dvds that is out for those movies like I would if Dillinger is Dead was released before. I want Criterion to release stuff, because of the fact no one else will ever do so. Don't be greedy people.

Now, having said all of that, my opinion of it, I don't look for people to turn this into a 3-page love fest. Just how I see things.
I'm not trying to pick a fight and I can only speak for myself, but I have no interest in buying DVDs. I'm interested in Blu-ray because it is both the present and future of home theater. I cannot go out and buy The Thin Red Line at all right now on Blu-ray, and that is why I am so stoked that Criterion is releasing it on Blu-ray. I cannot wait to add it to my Blu-ray library. Now to be honest, I really couldn't care less about The Darjeeling Limited as I find Wes Anderson to be a highly overrated film maker. But The Thin Red Line is an absolute masterpiece in my eyes, and I cannot wait for it to get a Blu-ray release.

Doesn't The Royal Tenenbaums fit that description more accurately?

The helmet itself isn't open. The reflective visor that goes over the helmet is just up.

I think "Triumph of the Will" would be an interesting choice for Criterion.

It's funny that for a 17 minute film, I still have never gotten around to watching it, yet. Trust me, though, it's on the never-ending list I have. It's actually in my Netflix queue so I'll get to it eventually. It's available for streaming through Netflix, as well, so that's probably the road I'll take.

Well bestbuy.com has completely taken the blu-ray for "M" off their website, so I'm assuming they're not selling it at any of their stores right now.

The order I had placed with hastings.com is delayed right now. I'm wondering if there might be some distribution issues with it for people that ordered it outside of amazon and criterion's own site.

I first heard of this film from the song "Debaser" by the Pixies. It's been a long time since I've last watched this, but the imagery is impossible to forget.

I bought Paris, Texas first and LOVED it! You will not be disappointed!

That prompted me to buy "Wings of Desire" when I saw it at Borders (with a 40% off coupon).

"Wings" was good, but I thought that "Paris" was better. Wim Wenders said that he didn't want to copy Paris, Texas and he certainly kept his word. It's a very different film. It has a "French Film" feel to it, but with a Wenders sensability about it.

Please let me know what you think about Paris, Texas and if you decide to purchase Wings of Desire.

I'm no expert, but my understanding is there's a completely transparent glass/plastic/whatever material at the front of the helmet and then an outer reflective visor that can open and close to protect from sunlight. In this picture below, you can see the reflective visor partially down.
