lol. Some may argue that's part of the essential ambiance.

It's a legitimate gripe, though. Criterion probably should have included a separate disc (CD perhaps) that contains, in its entirety, each piece of music that was featured in the film. But I suppose that probably would lead to additional licensing issues and expenses.

Hmm, looks as if ES 32 is quite popular around here (it's a strong contender for me, too). Also, the more I think about the stronger I feel about picking up ES 17. I've really come to enjoy Japanese films from that era and that studio, after seeing films like Black Sun, Branded to Kill and, especially, Tokyo Drifter.

ES 21 appeals to me as well, though I don't know if I'll be able to squeeze it into my other purchases for this sale (there really seems to be a lot that I've been thinking of buying). Maybe at the next B&N sale or if there's another sale or discount...

I agree. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is one of those old classics everyone should see and it helped impress upon me James Stewart's status of one of the best actors Hollywood ever had. He's long been one of my very favorite actors from that era, especially for his films from the 1950s.

Just got done watching Being John Malkovich again - on HD DVD. :P My last viewing was on laserdisc around the time that came out. Still a great flick. I had forgotten how funny it is. Not sure yet if I'll buy the Blu-ray. The HD DVD was decent, but a bit on the soft and murky side.
I'm also thinking of blind buying Rushmore, as well as Bottle Rocket though I'm more familiar with Wes Anderson's films, having seen most of the others. I would recommend you also check out The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited and especially his most recent film, this year's Moonrise Kingdom, which I feel is among the first or second best of all the titles I've seen in his filmography.

If you love quirky, simple, character stories...check it out.
Lena Dunham has now gone on to do GIRLS on HBO which is a great growth from Tiny Furniture (I watched them backward with all of GIRLS and then Tinty Furniture). The first episode was middling but then the second and third episodes really pack a kick. It writes extremely entitled white characters but then doesn't pull the punch by making fun of, denigrating or playing them ironically (think Woody Allen with Alice or Husbands and Wives).

They are all really interesting.
They are all very different in story, drama and tone. Each comes with a video essay that really helps contextualise Teshigahara's work with his screenwriter, novelistic Kobo Abe, and their shared themes and politics.
Although made in the 60s, Teshigahara seemed to favour a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, however the films never seem visually cramped. Visually, each is quite slick, but still quite gritty. He used the same cinematographer on each film.
He also used the same composer: Tôru Takemitsu. His work is fantastic and very memorable.
I highly recommend this set and I don't believe it suffers for being DVD.
I got mine at the B&N sale last year (I think) and loved the films.

For those of us who would like to see David Lynch in the collection, Eraserhead was added to the Criterion Hulu page.

This is fantastic news, thanks for posting. Hopefully this may pave the way for more Lynch movies on Criterion. It is a shame that we only have Blue Velvet and Dune on Region A Blu-ray.

What we know so far about In a Lonely Place is this (Twilight Time's reply on their FB page):

One of our faves, and of course we requested it, but were turned down. It's quite possibly been licensed to another label...
It's (more or less) obvious that Criterion have struck deal with Sony and acquired bunch of titles.Anathomy of a Murder, upcoming OTW;and-more than likely-In a Lonely Place,From Here to Eternity,etc...

The Vanishing is one of the creepiest films I've seen. The feeling I had while watching it was like the ending for
[Show spoiler]The French Connection
. It's that feeling for the entire film!

Just finished watching The Phantom Carriage. Loved the film, but it seems like a lot of people suggested the KTL score, and so I began with that, but started the film over with the orchestral one after a while. The KTL score is just so awkward to me with its consistently ominous mood that trundles on while the mood of the film is obviously changing. I thought it was rather bland, but that's why there are options. Just seems like I'm the only one who doesn't like it.

That's awesome news. I for one would double- or triple-dip on a Criterion edition of a number of Lynch films, especially provided exceptional transfers and supplements.

Particularly given the woeful recent UK releases that I highly anticipated.

Cue speculation for Mulholland Drive in 3, 2....

IMO The Phantom Carriage is one of the best silent films in the collection. I agree the orchestral score is better suited for the film and the KTL score can seem to get bogged down. The KTL score is not for everyone, but it does grow on you.

Completely off topic, but I finally watched my MoC Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend. Both looked superb. The 3 hour BBC extra on The Lost Weekend is worth the price of admission alone. Quite possibly one of the best special features ever created.

More Robert Altman on blu-ray is always a good thing. I do hope Criterion will upgrade more of its Altman selection soon, including Short Cuts and add more of his work to the collection such as Nashville, Thieves Like Us and Gosford Park. I've long had a suspicion that Criterion's next Altman film on blu will be released by the end of this year. Maybe even a pair of them.

Thanks for encouraging to pop my copies of both those films that I recently received from preorders into my player and watching them. (It would be my first time seeing The Lost Weekend.) I'm looking forward to it.

Any idea when they will be announcing Octobers releases. Rosemary's Baby and The Blob would be nice to have for halloween even better if they did the 1968 Night of the Living Dead.

^I would buy all 3 I'm a heartbeat but then people would complain because those movies are "too mainstream".

I'm kind of the opposite, I love the KTL score -- really gives off a creepy mood.

I do think, as others have said, that this is one of the best silent films that Criterion offers. In fact, it's one of my favorite silent films ever. It's at the top of my list of films to buy starting tomorrow during the sale.
