The original 1954 Japanese version for the win. I watch it far more often than the Americanized version.

I was fortunate to attend a theatrical screening of this Japanese version when the film was restored a few years ago. That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see the original Godzilla wrecking Tokyo on a big screen.

I've been quite busy spinning the new CDs from Johnny Marr and My Bloody Valentine myself.

I did see Iron Maiden in concert here in Atlanta with some friends this past summer. I was never a huge fan, but I have owned the Live After Death album for decades, and I had always wanted to see them live. I was not disappointed. That show rocked my face.
I saw Rush several times back in the 1990s, and a friend and I had fourth row seats to one of their shows the last time I saw them. Great band!

My two nieces love Taylor Swift, though, and I hear the songs every time I visit.

I'm happy for Taylor Swift's popularity. In truth, I'm happy for any musician's popularity these days, because I've always wondered if people are losing interest in that sort of thing with the increasing perception of music as computer data via mp3 files and such. I do not think that we'll ever see popularity for an artist on the same scale as Michael Jackson during the Thriller era, because times have changed, but it's always cool to see the kids being interested in any artist these days. (I'm 41, and I sincerely believe that anybody my age who says that they disliked Michael Jackson during the early 1980s is lying. I know I wore out my cassette tape of Thriller.)

Off topic so I hope the mod's won't be to hard on me for the posts I have been making today

When it come's to Iron Maiden well they came out with thier first album right at the moment I was leaving my kids days behind and KISS and I could not believe the songs they were making. I was surprise how they would write songs about poems and movies and scifi books. It's also the reason RUSH was always one of my favorite groups (plus they are from Canada ) As for a Maiden concert, no one can reach an audience like Bruce Dickinson. I am still amaze how his voice is still holding on even if he is no longer as young as he once was. Look at Geddy Lee from RUSH, he no longer hit the notes like he use to and they had to change the tempo of most of their older songs for concerts if they even play them at all.

At any point did you yell "That's gotta hurt!" during the screening?

They're not cinema masterpieces (Armageddon/The Rock) but they do have replay value for me. They're entertaining.

Plus, it's kind of silly for Criterion to put them as part of their collection and NOT attempt to have some type of release for them.
The Rock blu-ray IS the Criterion DVD, just not labeled as such. All the extras from the DVD are on the blu-ray

I'm surprised Criterion landed a movie like Traffic, considering it was a mainstream movie. I doubt they're going to get to add any major box office hits like Traffic from the late 90's to present. I know they also nabbed The Game as well. I would love to see a criterion release of Se7en.

So I'm curious as to what's left out there that's prized that Criterion hasn't grabbed or potentially can grab. I see Third Man was OOP because they lost the distribution rights, so I wonder what's the possibility they could get their hands on a movie like 2001 and give it a full force Criterion release. Or even a movie like Citizen Kane and To Kill A Mockingbird (which have gotten nice releases from WB and Universal).

Then again, I don't know how the process of all of it works. I see Armageddon and The Rock are listed as part of the Criterion collection but I don't think Criterion distributes any of their media releases.
In the laser disc days those major titles were readily available because the industry hadn't bought into dvd yet (I believe Criterion did issue a Citizen Kane laser disc). The fact we've got titles like Sweet Smell of Success, On the Waterfront, Night of the Hunter, etc is great (although maybe not great for the industry). These titles wouldn't have been licensed to Criterion back when dvd was relevant.

I love Iron Maiden. They're probably the only band i listened to in my youth that i still enjoy in the same way. If you've never seen them I'd recommend The History of Iron Maiden part one: The Early Years and Flight 666. Neat documentaries both. Not many bands have a lead singer who has a day job as a commercial airline pilot.

I'm spinning a lot of Stompin' Tom Connors today, as he passed away yesterday. A great Canadian icon.

Me too! Saw them with Alice Cooper in July and they had the best setlist ever! Phantom of the Opera, Seventh Son, Aces High, all the good stuff. It rained like hell that day and they had to delay the start of the concert but both Cooper and Maiden played their full sets. Best day of my life.

On topic: I may watch Blue this weekend. Can't wait to see it since i've heard so many good things about it and the others in the trilogy.

I kept my enthusiasm in check during that screening of Godzilla, although I did want to cheer during the high voltage wire scene. It's sort of difficult not to, because this is one of the most awesome scenes of any movie in history.

One does not simply walk through high voltage wires. Unless one is Godzilla.

I attended the Iron Maiden concert this summer with two friends of mine from high school (back in the late 1980s), because they were big Iron Maiden fans back then and had introduced me to the band. We had not seen each other for ages, so it was a great time.

I am now the proud owner of On the Waterfront.

I stopped by Barnes & Noble over lunch with my 20% off coupon from the email and used it in conjunction with my 10% Members and 10% off sticker price on the movie. 40% off of On the Waterfront, so the final price was $32.

I could have saved a couple bucks by purchasing On the Waterfront during the flash sale, but I wanted to buy this one at a store after verifying that the box was in perfect condition. No dents on the box, no markings, no floating discs inside, etc. It's all good.

I'll probably watch this over the weekend. Which screen ratio should I watch first?

I recommend the 1.67:1 but that is just my personal opinion. An amazing set.

Thanks! I'm thinking that I'll probably just put Disc One in the player and let it roll, so that I can go through some of the extras after the movie. The 1:85:1 version will probably appeal to me more because of the scenes with the big ships, but the ratio that you recommend is probably best for my first-time viewing of this movie.

This is what is important. The film itself is one of those rare films that can be watched over and over in MY opinion. It's a great experience to view it in both the others which I have done but the 1.67:1 is the best overall for a first time view.

Owl, I've got a 15% off BN coupon if you wanna get another CC on your wish list.

By the way, my Bloody Valentine's great, how about Criterion releasing a concert of theirs

Sure, I'll take it if you're not going to use it. I might stop by Barnes & Noble on Saturday for The Wages of Fear (what I meant to buy today before I saw the perfect-condition On the Waterfront box). If not, it'll be nice to use it for The Blob.

I'm floored at how good the album is. Much edgier than I expected, given that it's a "reunion" album after 20+ years of silence.

To further derail the thread:
Do I send you the link straight up?

2) holy hell!!!! I didn't know their newest had already been released!
I've literally listened through their discography a hundred times over (only Aimee Mann is more listened to)
