What a performance by Albert Finney! One of the things I love most about Huston's work involves the choice of locations and the ways that he captures times and places as much as characters - Under, Wise Blood, Night of the Iguana, and of course the Dead are nicely representative of this quality and achievement.
Yes, the way he captured time and place was to be envied. PT Anderson claimed he watched Treasure of the Sierra Madre dozens of times during the production of There will be Blood, and it is evident. Both films seduce you by a thick atmosphere. Being from the southwest (There will be Blood was filmed in a town three or four hours away from me), I can totally appreciate the work in both films. To my eye, complete authenticity.

Because it has been hinted at for years and some people want them to finally announce it. It's almost becoming a joke.

EDIT: And I imagine the Criterion release will be a better package than the one you listed.

Of print? I just noticed a price spike on amazon and ebay.
The same thing happened with Eclipse Series 13. I'm sure it will go back when they get more stock.

The movie is on Hulu if we want to watch it. I'm a big advocate of importing, but it has been "on deck" for so long it is practically the principal of the thing.

I mentioned this back in the thread awhile ago, but I was wondering if Cuaron's focus on Gravity set back the release date for Y Tu Mama. Maybe he hasn't had time to do some interviews or a commentary that Criterion wants, so maybe the extras for the release have put this thing on hold.

Yes. That is the case. Gravity has been in post production for over a year now, I believe. Cuaron has definitely got his hands tied.

absolutely. Huston is one of the great American directors, taking on many genres, making big movies as well as more modest ones, and pushing his work artistically late into his career. I didn't know that about Anderson but I can definitely see it now. Blood works as a western epic and a commentary on adventurism and manifest destiny in much the same way that Treasure does, and it captures a similar kind of authenticity. It's also interesting to think of these films in light of the melancholic west captured here . . .

By coincidence, I was planning to watch it tonight, just before the new Olive Blu-ray of THE MEN (since today, May 30th, is the original traditional date for Memorial Day). Huston's LET THERE BE LIGHT is one of the films included in the Topics Entertainment 4-disc set WWII IN HI DEF. It's a powerful film. I saw it maybe 20 years or so ago in 16mm. I'm hoping this Blu-ray has a good transfer from a decent print. The copy included with THE MASTER is only in standard-definition.

This might be an American Lost and Found day, since a co-worker gave me one of his $10 gift cards after helping him move some stuff a few days ago. That combined with the B&N 40% off will be good, and a copy of the set is now available at the place near me. If it's in good condition, I'm there. I've been itching to upgrade my old DVD set for months.

There are more in stock. Maybe they are no longer OOP? Didn't Criterion mention they are going to create more copies?

Often, when something goes out of print it takes a long time before the existing copies disappear. There are probably some still out there, which is how Amazon and other retailers can still sell the title.

Agree, but only after an upgrade of Under The Volcano. And how about some more Huston in the CC? I love John Huston, in my top 5 directors for sure.

Are you a fan of all the films included in the set? I can't see myself returning to Drive He Said and A Safe Place?

Unrelated, but which film did you end up seeing yesterday? Heaven's Gate?

I was browsing through FYE yesterday and stumbled upon a used copy of The Ballad of Narayama that was mislabeled as a DVD with a $10 price tag. Tempted to jump on it but I passed, my Criterion love hasn't gotten that out of hand (though it was only $10).

They have good deals every now and then.

Anyways I hope to see Y Tu Mama Tambien out before too long, not because I'm tired of hearing about it but the fans have been teased for so long now they deserve some good news.
