I would say that The 400 Blows is a great intro to art house Criterion titles. I've been trying to get into some of the classic art house films and I found The 400 Blows to be very enjoyable. While its not as classic, I think that Wings of Desire is a good intro film as well.

Atleast check out Pierrot Le Fou and Vivre Sa Vie before giving up on him.
Oh, I'm not giving up. I have Vivre Sa Vie, Pierrot Le Fou, Band of Outsiders and Weekend in my Netflix queue. Any suggestion on which to watch next?

Check out Vivra sa Vie. My favorite Godard is Pierrot le Fou (I've seen it countless times) but that might not be for everyone. Contempt is also great. Shows how the smallest of things can unravel a relationship.

Plaza Theatre in midtown Atlanta. It's a great place! Google "Plaza Theatre, Atlanta" to check it out online, or make friends with "Plaza Atlanta" on Facebook (the FB profile photo is the poster for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas).

There have not been any official announcements yet, because the theater owner told me that they had just secured the film, but he said that it would be announced at some point soon.

Last Year at Marienbad was one of those films for me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't J. Rosenbaum deem it the greatest film of all time (if he had to choose one)?
RiFiFi1955: I wasn't smacking the side of my head trying to keep awake but I did a good job keeping my eyes open nevertheless.

I think the "rape" scene toward the end when the lighting went overexposed and the camera walked right into the woman several times really startled the living daylights out of me. It was truly horrifying to say the least. The shift into overexposed light was especially effective.

I'd say because of that pivotal scene, it kept me fully awake toward the end of the movie. So for that, I applaud the film.

You know what film equally bored me...something I was forced to watch a few weeks back...a little movie called This Means War, I hate dating for instances like this alone. This Means War was brutal even for that type of movie...was just internally shaking my head the whole time. Just watched Polanski's Carnage last night...very enjoyable.

The first time I watched it was right when the Criterion edition was released when I was 17. I bought the DVD (upgraded it soon after....even though I had blu-ray, I wasn't blu-obsessed yet ). I watched it late at night on the small screen of a laptop, and yet I was still completely mesmerized. The opening scene, with the repeating narration over the images of endless hallways had this strange nightmarish feel that instantly pulled me in and kept me fascinated throughout the entire film. I didn't even try to decipher any meaning that first time, I was just totally captivated by this odd dream of lost memories and loved every minute. I don't know about anyone else, but to me it loses a bit of that appeal with each viewing, so it's one of those films (like Salo to an extent) that relies heavily on first experience-impressions that make or break the film for you (that could just be me, though).

If you love him so much you'd think you could spell his name right. Alas, you are wrong either way.

Carnage is a great little film! Now THAT is a film that kept my attention until the very last scene. What a difference a movie can make! The film was dialogue driven and just shot in one location and it reminds me a lot of Polanski's other film Death and the Maiden. Still to this day I am perplexed as to why that film hasn't been brought to blu-ray! I think it would make a for a splendid Criterion edition. It stars Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley and Stuart Wilson and THAT'S IT! Total minimalism and total brilliance. I'll take that any day over some over-stylized, pretentious film such as LYAM.

I'm sure you haven't seen every single director in the collection, but I bet that wasn't taken into consideration when making this post.

I saw Carnage a week or two ago and I loved it! It was hilarious!

Atlanta folk: Tara is showing Godfather, Chinatown, 2001 and Gone with the Wind on the big screen next week, one a day at 8 pm (I think) for Tara's 45th anniversary. Haven't seen 2001 on the big screen since I was dopey in hs.

The new 4k restoration of the greatest movie ever made (Lawrence of Arabia) is at the Fox at the end of the month. The preview felt like Jordan.

Really? I couldn't find a single exquisite thing about this film. Boring, bland, emotionless, and overlong.

It was well done.

I can see how some may view it as boring, but I think it's one of Fincher and Pitt's best. It kept me engrossed from start to finish.
