Oh, they all have some terrible one-liners. Some of them are real clunkers in fact. It's just that it always seemed to me that the Brosnan era films were so smugly self-conscious about it. It's like in the Moore era, the one-liner itself would be the "joke" but in the Brosnan era it wasn't so much the one-liner itself but the fact they were inserting "obligatory Bond one-liner" that was the joke.

I already had a pile of unwatched titles and today I had three more films show up. Orpheus, Sweet Smell of Success, and Pale Flower. I've been home four days now and have only been able to City Lights from my recent purchases. I've been way too caught up in catching up on 2013 releases that I've missed over the last 5 months that I am squeezing in right before they are yanked from theaters. I'm hoping to find time for something tomorrow, maybe Nashville or Frances Ha.

![]() Don't know if it's that clear or not, but it's all sitting on the Wes Anderson Collection. |

Just got done revisiting all of Terence Malick's films over the last few days and here's how I'd rank them:
1. The New World: Director's Cut (top 20 all time for me) 2. The Thin Red Line 3. Days of Heaven 4. The Tree of Life 5. To The Wonder 6. Badlands |

That is precisely the order I would give as well! Although 1 and 2 can be swapped in either way...both are classics...yet I'm leaning more and more towards The New World as his best film.

I bought Secret Sunshine at Barnes & Noble yesterday and after taking off the plastic wrapping, I noticed that there was a "Director Approved Edition" sticker ON the actual plastic of the Blu-ray case! This is the first Criterion I've acquired that has such a sticker. Is there any rhyme or reason for it or did I just get lucky? I've purchased various other "Director Approved Edition" Criterion Blu-rays before but none of them had such a sticker.

It's already Xmas here, and sadly my BN.com orders from the sale didn't arrive in time. Lucky they weren't gifts for friends, just me.
Oh and on Malick, I though I was in the minority but yeah, New World is defs the best thing he's done (I'm ambivalent about him on the whole), and I haven't had a chance to check out the blu yet, it's on the shelf though. But how on earth can you put Badlands on the bottom? Especially with the To The Wonder above it? NW and Badlands are the only ones I really like unconditionally of them all. |

I watched Moon and The Game last night, and enjoyed both immensely. Fun Trivia Fact: The director of Moon, Duncan Jones, is David Bowie's son. I immediately liked him even more after learning about this. After watching The Game, I automatically added it to my Criterion wishlist. I have now seen 5 films directed by David Fincher, and I rank them as follows: 1. The Game (will own soon) 2. Se7en (own blu-ray digibook) 3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (own) 4. The Social Network 5. Fight Club Hopefully, I can catch Panic Room, Zodiac, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on tv soon. Although, I wasn't a big fan of the original Swedish version of TGWTDT, so I'm not in a big hurry to see the remake. Well, Merry Christmas everyone! ![]() ![]() |

I just watched The Wind Rises.
It is so incredibly done by Hayao Miyazaki. We know he loves fighter aircraft but hate war. This is the time he put this sort of contradiction to his own film. He also precisely combined 3 substances: the story of a real life person, a famous japanese fiction, and the dreams sequences he created (his own feeling i believe) altogether. 2. The Tree of Life 3. Badlands 4. The New World 5. Days of Heaven I have not yet watched To The Wonder. The problem with ranking Malick is that by placing Days of Heaven last, it would make you believe that it's a bad film - far from the truth, with some of the best cinematography I've ever seen. |
