I wrote in my review that The Wolf of Wall Street has Leonardo DiCaprio in his best role, and that this is my favorite Scorsese film since Goodfellas. This new film shares a lot of similarities to Goodfellas, but the black comedy/satire aspects save it from being a mere retread of that film.

[Show spoiler]The dragon's supposed to be guarding the Ring
, which we'd know if the other Nibelungen films survived.
But then, silent films weren't strong on plot, and pretty much just put up Famous Tableaus of scenes from the story.

Got 3 Criterions today. Eating Raoul, Videodrome, and Repo Man are now mine.

I also got the original MGM release of Blow Out for Christmas in a Travolta set.

When does the 40% off sale at b&n end? Thought it was 1/2/14? I'm like many people on a Scorsese kick and wanna get black narcissus
I'm also interested in this, with a B&N gift card from Christmas. I think the sale ended online, but you can check with your local B&N store to see if the sale is still going on. I too am looking at Powell and Pressburger....Red Shoes looks like a fantastic film (and a fantastic BD), but I'm also finding myself captivated by the Kanchenjunga mountain setting of Black Narcissus and I've never seen it.

For any B&N buyers, would you recommend buying now or waiting until July for the 50% sale + additional coupons?

He COULD... But very unlikely.

In this case, no one says he has to rent the Criterion, just that he see the film. And THEN buy the Criterion, IF he happens to like it. Which will likely be an improvement in any case.
Really?

Hoping for a lot more horror next year from the Collection.
Eraserhead, The Cronenberg stuff, a BD of Sisters, amongst other things... Maybe a few more Godzillas?

Good pickup. I heard good things about Repo Man and Eating Raoul. But I heard mixed things about Videodrome.

Some eclectic options there. Repo Man is very off the wall as is Videodrome, however that's where the similarities end. Videodrome is a film, based on personal experiences, that you either love or hate. From the people I've talked to that have seen it, it's been very polarizing. I can't recall anyone saying "It was OK".

Eating Raoul however I really enjoyed. A good example of 80's cheese comedy. I have a non CC DVD version of Repo Man that I haven't watched in a while. I keep meaning to dust it off and give it another viewing but haven't done so yet.

I went to my relatives house on Christmas. One of the people there (who I was barely related to) talked a lot about films, and one of the films he recommended was Repo Man. I remember Eating Raoul being on Roger Ebert's "Great Films" list. I've heard all types of responses to Videodrome on this thread. My local library got closed down for renovations, and it's opening on the 4th. So I'll probably rent all 3 of them when it opens

I didn't care for Videodrome. It seemed too... fractured for me; but it was designed and filmed that way. It does have some creepy scenes and gore effects though along with a decent plot twist. It's another one I've owned for a while (Blind buy, however it was in the $5 bin at Best Buy IIRC) and haven't ever had the urge to revisit it after my last viewing years ago.

That's Why I'm gonna rent it and not buy it: because everyone has a difference stance on it. You, for example, don't like it very much, but people like Andy Warhol think it's an amazing film. He called it "A Clockwork Orange" of the '80's

Here's my glowing review of Lewis Allen's Suddenly.

Fans of Lewis Allen's Criterion title, The Uninvited, might want to give Suddenly a look to see different display of this director's talents. If you liked Stanley Kubrick's The Killing, then you may want to check this movie out to watch Sterling Hayden in another prominent role. Of course, Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, commands the most attention with his villain role here.

Good review. I'm getting into the film noir genre now (Shadow of a Doubt, Following), and this might be a good rental.

So hopefully 2014 will bring us some long awaited Cronenberg films like-Scanner and The Brood. Maybe they can get their hands on Dead Ringers, Rabid and Shivers.

Videodrome was fantastic, if you ask me. My mother is one of the few you speak of. She thought it was weird but alright; in other words, nothing special.

Criterion has some superb film noir entries on Blu-ray...
The Killing/Killer's Kiss
Kiss Me Deadly
Sweet Smell of Success
Ministry of Fear
The Night of the Hunter

...and, of course, the out-of-print The Third Man, which can be found on the inferior, but nonetheless impressive StudioCanal Blu-ray.

(I personally think that The Night of the Hunter falls somewhat outside the parameters of film noir, but it is commonly classified in the genre and it is also one of my Top Five Criterion titles.)

Fritz Lang's M is a great predecessor to the genre.

Pale Flower is an incredible Japanese film noir of sorts.

Rififi is an outstanding film noir title that will be in my hands in a couple of weeks, because I cannot wait to upgrade my old DVD to Blu-ray.

Ace in the Hole is another superb noir title that has been hinted as a Criterion upgrade.

There are some incredible film noir gems on Criterion DVD that I am hoping will see the light of day on Blu-ray...

Night and the City
The Naked City
Thieves' Highway
Pickup on South Street
The Killers
Blast of Silence
Brute Force
Stray Dog
The Bad Sleep Well

I still have not seen Christopher Nolan's Following, so I should prioritize that for a future sale.

Yes, this could be the worthy companion piece to Goodfellas. This sounds like a double feature now! First watch Goodfellas and then finish off the night with The Wolf of Wall Street.

If you haven't checked this out yet, it's a good place to reference too:
