Wonderful idea and thanks for compiling these! I do think that Tootsie was very heavily hinted at with the candies in the New Year's Drawing.

Depends on what you're looking for from a film. It's a very diverse set, from what I've seen, so it's not even easy to recommend if you like film X. That said, all three (Touki Bouki, The Housemaid, Dry Summer) I've watched are at least 4 star films, with Dry Summer being very close to a 5 star.

"Jules et Jim" is Truffaut at about his most accomplished, IMO. And it's a great performance by Jeanne Moreau at the center of it all.

"Black Narcissus" is I think one of the most beautiful films ever made. It's a Powell and Pressburger movie, and whether or not you like really will depend on how you feel about their other films. But Deborah Kerr is amazing, and Jean Simmons is gorgeous and ... well, see the movie.

I put "In the Mood For Love" in my all-time Top-10, so it's obvious how I feel about this one. I think it's Wong Kar-Wai's best movie, which is saying something. Maggie Cheung has never been more radiant or captivating. And I'm telling you: It will take MONTHS for the soundtrack to leave your head. A truly gorgeous, romantic, memorable film.
I like these 4 choices although I haven't seen all of the films on the original poster's list. Yeah, Jean Simmons is gorgeous, but her playing an Indian woman was a bit of a tough sell for me. Although, if I recall correctly,
[Show spoiler] she doesn't have a single line of dialogue in the film. She just has to kinda slither around... and look nice... w/ all that make up...
Still looked good though.. don't get me wrong.

an announcement of a restoration is enough to consider that the film is coming?

because Elevator to the Gallows had a restoration and a theatrical run earlier this year.. although I think the run was only in the U.K.

No, I know. But then, this was 1947. I'd say the odds against them finding an actual Indian actress to play that part were pretty much nil.

I mean, stuff like that still happens today, but now when it does there is a backlash, to one degree or another. But back then, I could be wrong, but I doubt anyone even noticed.

And ...
[Show spoiler]yeah, she doesn't speak. She's just the disruptive 'sex kitten' character.

Ahh, it was a different time.

I've little doubt that they could've found an Indian actress to play the part. But the point is, why would they go through the trouble? At that time, casting against race wasn't a big deal, so it would've been more trouble than it was worth.

Even today (assuming large values of "today") you occasionally get a performance that trumps race casting concerns. While there was no doubt some, I recall very little protest when Linda Hunt was cast not only as an Asian, but a male Asian, in The Year of Living Dangerously. Certainly not after people saw what an awesome performance it was.

Alec Guinness in Lawrence of Arabia comes to mind. I love Black Narcissus though, I find it very erotic and not because of Jean Simmons, although she is beautiful in it.

Jean Simmons's role in Black Narcissus is pretty great. The casting choice is strange, but it is also quite inspired.

On the subject of casting choices that are more obnoxiously obtrusive, I watched the Blu-ray of Breakfast at Tiffany's a couple of months ago. That one features the Mickey Rooney role that nobody seemed to mention in his many newspaper obituaries back in April.

The scene with Sister Ruth applying her lipstick was probably the most erotic part of the movie for me, and that scene looks incredible on the Blu-ray.

I should revisit Black Narcissus. It's such an otherworldly and visually-striking film.

She is literally 'gagging for it' throughout the entire movie! That scene is great though, also the close-up of her eyes -- just fantastic in HD. I guess for anyone reading and looking for something to get in the sale: highly recommended!

Speaking of Lawrence of Arabia, it's been a long-held belief of mine that Anthony Quinn has the greatest diversity of ethnic/racial roles than any other actor, living or dead.

OK, true. They could have found someone, but as you say, "Why?" Why not just cast Simmons, and then be able to advertise, "Jean Simmons!"

No one wants to remember that. We all love that film as it's a GREAT film. But that unfortunate aspect is best left forgotten. I think it's that simple.

I assume if Lynch is involved, then Mulholland Drive will still be "censored" during the sex scene. Although I figure they can do a better job than the blurring spot on the DVD. Maybe just darken that area? How does the UK blu handle it?

I have faith that Janus' restoration of L'Avventura is an indication of an upgrade, but I'm on the fence with Hiroshima.

The DVD and VHS versions of the film were self-censored by Lynch for sexual content. He had an additional blurring effect added to Laura Harring's crotch in the scene where she climbs into bed with 'Naomi Watts (I)'. The blurring was requested by David Lynch himself because he disapproved of nude pictures of Harring being distributed on the Internet.

Because Laura Harring was uncomfortable with the thought of sites like Mr. Skin posting stills from it.

I got DVD not Bluray (am waiting eagerly, hoping Criterion releases it).

Seems odd he would censor though? :/ I thought the sex in the film was important to the characters development and story O_o

Ah fair enough... but why film it in first place if uncomfortable? Naomi Watts was crying out of embarrassment due to masturbation sequence but she still did it as it was important, and such a powerful sequence of the film.
