Speaking of my future purchase list, these titles top the list and will likely be my B&N sale purchases (along with a couple of June and July new releases): Quadrophenia Weekend (Godard) Wings of Desire Paris, Texas 3:10 to Yuma Jubal |

I actually neglected to mention quite a few excellent noirs in my post. I've seen so many of them over the past couple of years. Where the Sidewalk Ends is one of the better entries, though, and the Fox DVD is good stuff. Angel Face is another outstanding Otto Preminger noir. Here's the thing about the old classic-era film noirs, when viewed through my contemporary eyes... Most of these black-and-white film noir movies start out in a leisurely-paced fashion, compared to the attention-deficit cinema that exists today, and the expositions often turn contemporary viewers off as being too quaint. Almost all of these film noirs, however, reach a point halfway through the story where they suddenly become awesome. If you are familiar with the genre, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Private Hell 36 is a perfect example of a movie that takes a glorious turn for intensity halfway through. Many of the noir greats, however, seem to share this aspect, where the tension is turned up to Spinal Tap 11 once things get underway. Last edited by The Great Owl; 06-24-2014 at 02:02 PM. |

Wow pretty excited about Mulholland Drive. One of my favorite films being released by one of my favorite companies. I can't wait to rewatch it in hi def finally. And anxious to see what kind of extras they come out with. Definitely my most anticipated Criterion release ever.

I'm looking forward to Criterion release of La Dolce Vita.
I'm not huge on Terry Gilliam's movies, but I liked watching Time Bandits back in my early 1980s childhood. I may have to give the upcoming Criterion Blu-ray a go. |

The Criterion DVD is still in print, so I imagine that Criterion must still have the rights to it. How likely it is to get an upgrade would probably depend on how much work (if any) needs to be done to make a BD-worthy transfer.

Interesting you say it's your favorite release of 2014. With so many great releases this year. Gonna have to check it out now. I'll add it to my BN list. My favorite release of 2014 so far has to be Persona. What did you think of it?

Amarcord is quite funny but also an interesting look at growing up In The Mood For Love is a touching look at relationships I have bought Branded To Kill but yet to watch, looks crazy. Naked, again not seen but is on my list, David Thewlis is amazing in this (so I have heard) |

2014 is rocking out with some great Criterion releases. Actually, 2014 is rocking out with some great Blu-ray releases from almost every studio. Twilight Time has been cranking out some great ones lately, and the last batch of Olive Films new releases was ace. July is going to be pretty intense on my wallet... The Time Machine (1960) Point Blank Southern Comfort Caught Under the Skin Marty Insomnia (1997) Scanners Pickpocket Arch of Triumph Witness for the Prosecution The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes The Other Love Separate Tables The Final Terror Not to mention the three Twilight Time releases that I've already paid for. (Violent Saturday, Born Yesterday, Brannigan) Thankfully, the Criterion titles will be 50% off at Barnes & Noble during July. Last edited by The Great Owl; 06-24-2014 at 03:18 PM. |

I think it is both helpful and beneficial to compose a list of titles that have been confirmed or hinted at, but not released yet.
Please let me know if I am missing any.

"Weekend" is amazing, but it's DEFINITELY not for everyone. I would seriously read up on it before choosing it. And I should mention that I'm Godard freak -- if my avatar didn't already make that clear. ![]() "Jules et Jim" is Truffaut at about his most accomplished, IMO. And it's a great performance by Jeanne Moreau at the center of it all. "Black Narcissus" is I think one of the most beautiful films ever made. It's a Powell and Pressburger movie, and whether or not you like really will depend on how you feel about their other films. But Deborah Kerr is amazing, and Jean Simmons is gorgeous and ... well, see the movie. ![]() I put "In the Mood For Love" in my all-time Top-10, so it's obvious how I feel about this one. I think it's Wong Kar-Wai's best movie, which is saying something. Maggie Cheung has never been more radiant or captivating. And I'm telling you: It will take MONTHS for the soundtrack to leave your head. A truly gorgeous, romantic, memorable film. |

Tell me about it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to spend much during the B&N sale. Between the Kino Lorber Studio Classics releases and the Twin Peaks set, there won't be much left. I'm going to try to pick up The World Cinema Project and The Essential Jaqcues Demy during the sale, but I think that might have to be it.
