It's unfortunate that the 2013 Blu-ray and DVD leaves out the "Banned in Oklahoma" documentary that was on the 2004 DVD edition. One of the best extras I've come across on any Criterion title.
Me, I've loved the film since I first saw it on cable back in the 80s. Picked up the Kino DVD (one of Kino's earlist DVDs), and then the first Criterion edition. Still need to get the Blu-ray, so I can see the Restored Director's Cut. |

Which was probably the point of the original book, but fantasy-allegory gets a bit annoying for me after it keeps nudging you to "get it" after a while. Like a friend who keeps hinting that he wants to borrow your car, but never gets around to actually saying it. ![]() Quote:

Just finished watching, Youth of the Beast on Hulu. Wow, what a fantastically well made film. Everything from the color pallet to the beautifully jazzy score. Tamio Kawaji steals the show as a Bondesq type villain. Petting his cat, while he plots his evil schemes. The ending alone is worth the price of admission.

On Glazer, I really with someone, anyone, be it Criterion, MoC or whoever would do something with Birth. As fantastic as UTSkin is, I still think Birth pips it. I put on a screening of the film last year in tribute to Harris Savides, the film's cinematographer, who sadly passed away in 2012, and it was glorious to revisit. I saw the film on release, and the print we screened last year was Glazer's own silver nitrate print of the film, which had only been thru a projector a handful of times. He even came along to introduce the film! To keep this on topic, Savides was very much a friend of Criterion, and even got to go in to their legendary cupboard when signing off on The Game. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/cQFAPBbjsaI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

So I'm trying to complete my Louis Malle collection. I've been holding off on Murmur of the Heart and Lacombe, Lucien on Blu. Anybody have any insight as to why Au Revoir Les Enfants is the only Malle film to get the Blu treatment? If all hope is lost for his other films I was thinking of picking them up on DVD during the BN sale.

I just watched Quadrophenia and I'm sorry, but I absolutely hated it.
I will admit that it had some nice shots. A couple that stand out are the shot of Jimmy with the sunset in the background at the very beginning of the film and the out-of-focus shot of The Mods on their way to Brighton about midway through the film. Unfortunately, I found every other part of the film to be painful to sit through. I've never been the biggest Who fan, but that wasn't even a part of my dislike for the film. It had some of the most irritating characters to date and a really, really, really uninteresting story centered around the gang wars in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s - something that I could never stand. Welp, can't win them all. ![]() |

So I finally got to watching my copy of Marketa Lazarova. And I really didn't know what was going on for most of it. I couldn't even finish it to be honest. It really bums me out cause I was really expecting to love this film. I know it's gotten alot of praise and I was wondering if I'm missing something here. I was kinda just waiting to see if it would eventually pick up but nothing. Idk, alot of what I've read has said that it demands repeat viewings so I might give it another try sometime.

I'm also a huge Tarkovsky fan and I feel this film is maybe the closest thing I've ever seen to his work. |

The story is difficult to describe without giving away the twists that make the film so intriguing and full of surprises (and spoil it for those who have not seen it). I think of the premise as something akin to a set of Russian nesting dolls, as the main character, a cybernetics engineer named Fred Stiller, investigates a series of mysteries involving his computer simulation project that recreates a realistic and functioning virtual world, and in the process slowly uncovers an apparent conspiracy so frightening and powerful it threatens his definition of the real world we see around us every day. Fassbinder uses the Stiller character to explore themes of paranoia and mental stability in a future society, while raising questions about technology and its effects on humanity. Much like Blade Runner, it has strong noir elements. Because World on a Wire has influenced more recent better known films, it may not appear to a viewer as fresh as it did to audiences in 1973, but it is still a first rate film and classic of science fiction. I read an article a couple of years ago that World on a Wire should appeal to fans of Kubrick, Philip K. Dick, and Kurt Vonnegut, and I agree with that assessment. The film got a lot of discussion in this thread in 2012, but many here now were not part of this thread when that happened, and many of the members who were active in this thread then are not regulars here anymore. It deserves to be brought back to the forefront and should be on the short list of any Criterion or sci-fi fan who does not own it. I highly recommend it for the next B&N sale.
