That is lush - I wasn't thinking of getting this release but that may sway me... (how shallow am I!). Definitely a fan of these digipaks (until I get a bashed one)

The 3 disc plastic cases. I'm glad you have had better luck than I have.

Nice! Hats off to both of y'all.

I generally run about 45 miles a week, but I sometimes run more than that if I'm in the peak of training.

For about three or four years, I competed in one marathon or ultramarathon a month. In late 2012, I was one of the top 10 finishers at a 50-mile mountain ultramarathon, and I finished a 100-mile ultra. I've never been a fast runner, but I did finish a 10K in 47 minutes in 2012. My fastest marathon was finished in four hours and 20 minutes. The ultramarathons (any distance longer than a marathon) is a different sort of animal altogether, and, like most of the participants, I power-walk up the hills and then run the downhills and flats. I walked most of the 100-mile race, and finished in just under 29 hours.

I suffered a foot injury in April of 2013, though, and was derailed for most of last year. I ran a few fun half marathon races this past fall, but that was about it.

During the past few months, I've rebounded nicely. I finished a marathon in March, albeit a painfully slow one, I finished a 50K last month, and, this past Sunday, I participated in an 8-hour fixed time race and completed 29.5 miles around the one-mile trail route during that time frame.

I'm what they call a "Clydesdale runner", meaning that I have a large build, and I do not look like a runner in the normal sense. The pounds always fly off when I'm doing well with the training, though, and that's what's happening right now.

Shell, I've had tendinitis before, and it sucks. I got through it by using a foam roller massage device and by having a few deep tissue massages, but it wasn't easy.

(This is not Criterion-related in any shape, form, or fashion, except to say that it would be cool to see The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner picked up as a title.)

This, however, is a Criterion-related post...

I see on DVDBeaver that a foreign Blu-ray of Jules Dassin's Night and the City has been released.

C'mon, Criterion! Make it happen.

There's a girl here in town with whom I've been friends for many years. She's a huge fan of Kino releases, but she collects Criterions here and there (Carnival of Souls, Haxan, Vampyr, and other horror selections, mainly). She throws a huge barbecue party every Memorial Day Weekend, and it's always fun to see the new stuff that she's added to her movie shelf.

There are some cool peeps out and about who have good taste in movies. I was at a party a few months back and got into a long discussion with a couple of people about the awesomeness of Anatomy of a Murder.

I've found it's a lot easier to give movie suggestions than music recommendations.

I've had excellent luck in the past getting people to see Hitchcock and Woody Allen films, for example. Music is tougher. A lot of people are set in their ways and won't listen to something if it's of a particular genre (like country or pre-1950's Americana).

Criteriondating.com . That sounds good to me. Ha ha ha he he he ho ho ho.

Just to touch on a couple of titles mentioned here:

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is amazing - great b&w UK drama, and one of my favorites from the 1960's.

A film that I found would go well with this (in a double-showing, perhaps) is another Criterion title, This Sporting Life (1963, starring Richard Harris). Excellent drama about a coal miner turned rugby player, and possibly my favorite RH film.

And, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover is another fantastic & also grotesque movie.
[Show spoiler]The ending (where one of the characters was cooked & served in a meal) was quite horrific & unexpected.
IIRC, I've only seen this once, and not only was the story great, but I was also impressed by the vivid colors used in the film (reds, etc.). This film would be great on a Criterion Blu, especially since the DVD is long OOP & appears to be quite expensive these days...

I only own three Criterion titles; those would be The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Godzilla, and Repo Man. I've made a list of other titles I want to own in my collection, but due to monetary constraint by living on budget, I had to put that project on the back-burner for now and buy those films later. If any of you would like to look over my list to make any suggestions, please feel free to check it out below:

-Rosemary's Baby
-Seven Samurai
-The Seventh Seal
-High and Low
-The Blob
-The Hidden Fortress
-Following
-Lord of the Flies
-Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
-Two Lane Blacktop
-Videodrome
-Easerhead
-Scanners
-Persona
-Che
-Brazil
-Traffic
-Theif
-Rififi
-MacBeth
-Dazed and Confused
-The Uninvited
-The Fantastic Mr. Fox
-The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
-The 400 Blows
-Naked Lunch
-Paths of Glory
-It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World
-By Brakhage: An Anthology
-A Hollis Frampton Odyssey
-Science is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé
-The Qatsi Trilogy

Nice list! I'd recommend picking up the three Mallick films while you're at it: Badlands, Days of Heaven, and The Thin Red Line. And Revanche.

I wouldn't go from the 3 you have into the last 4 on your list (actually, I'm not familiar with Jean Painlevé)

add your collection to your profile, maybe, and it'd be easier to give suggestions.

until then, Rosemary's Baby and Rififi have to be two of the most accessible, and for me, enjoyable films in the collection. try those.

British New Wave from the 60s is under-represented on Criterion. Would love to see The Knack and How to Get It, A Taste of Honey, or anything with Rita Tushingham, really.

Peter Greenaway is not for everyone. I, for one, don't care for his films and I would have walked out of The Cook, etc. I think I only finished the video because the person I was watching it with wanted to see it through. I think Greenaway has a distinctive directorial voice, however, and he would not be out of place in the collection. Just not in my collection

I had a couple of friends accompany me to the theatrical showings of 8˝ and Solaris this past spring, and that was pretty cool.

I don't have to date a woman who likes the same movies. I would, however, like to date a woman who does not mind the fact that I love watching a lot of movies. The same thing goes for my running. I don't have to date a woman who runs, but I would have to date a woman who does not mind the fact that I run a lot.
Forget about finding someone with mutual interests. Find someone with mutual values who has an open mind. That's the route I went and it has worked out wonderfully. Recent question she asked me, "wait... go-DARD is French and bo-GART is English? I thought this was a collection of French films that you bought." (after buying Best of Bogart on blu) then we sit down, watch Casablanca together and she really digs it. that's really awesome!

So I watched all the extras on my Godard titles, (Breathless, Vivre sa Vie, Pierrot le fou) and there were lots of goodies to be found. So great to see a young, shy, soft-spoken Anna Karina talk about being discovered by Godard on the Vivre disc, and a late 60-something Karina talk about working on Pierrot in such a lively, confident, joyous manner.

It's really insane how Godard went from his first feature 1960's Breathless to his 10th feature Pierrot le fou in just five years! Stuffed between those films include Vsv, A Woman is a Woman, Contempt, Band of Outsiders, Alphaville. I need to finally see that last one at some point. The rapid growth, experimentation, and output is truly remarkable. The only thing I can compare it to is how The Beatles went from A Hard Day's Night to Revolver to Sgt. Pepper's to the White Album in less than a five year period. It never ceases to amaze me.

Another great British New Wave 1960's film is Saturday Night, Sunday Morning (starring Albert Finney).

Completely agree about PG. Other than The Cook, The Thief..., I think the only other one Greenaway film I've seen (all the way through) was The Belly of an Architecht - very strange, though fascinating at the same time. I've thought about checking out some of his other films, but haven't done so yet...

I found it to be a very accessible film and very enjoyable. Also, at least for me, its rewatchable.
