I just had a theory... does the Criterion Collection make people into obsessive, neurotic, fussy, perfectionistic film buffs? I think it has done that to me.

Criterion should launch their own free dating site for likeminded neurotics like myself who can meet new girls, friends and talk to other people who love admiring their shelves of Criterion films that are on display. It would be brilliant.

Criteriondating.com . That sounds good to me. Ha ha ha he he he ho ho ho.

Aw it is? Damn. I was expecting a 3 disc Scanavo case for that one.

I'm really looking forward to Y Tu Mama Tambien as well. I liked Children of Men, more for it's dramatic, impressive scenes of filmmaking (those long takes!), and I loved Gravity.

There are actually MeetUp.com groups here in Atlanta that cater to film lovers who go to movies together and discuss them afterwards. I've never joined one, but the thought has crossed my mind a few times. Ever so often, I go to a movie with offline friends, but those instances are few and far between. Fortunately, I sort of prefer going to see movies alone.

I had a couple of friends accompany me to the theatrical showings of 8½ and Solaris this past spring, and that was pretty cool.

I don't have to date a woman who likes the same movies. I would, however, like to date a woman who does not mind the fact that I love watching a lot of movies. The same thing goes for my running. I don't have to date a woman who runs, but I would have to date a woman who does not mind the fact that I run a lot.

For several years I would run about 900-1000 miles a year. I'd only take 1 day off a week because I enjoyed it so much. Running at night during the summer was the best. Unfortunately, it caught up with me in the form of some nasty tendinitis. I really haven't tried running since but keep in shape with other activities.

Nice to know that there are runners and Criterion fans here. I try to do at least two Marathons a year. I just completed San Francisco this past Sunday, and my city of Los Angeles last March. Santa Barbara is next in November.

It always bothered me that Siskel and Ebert saw no value in Silence of the Lambs when they reviewed it. Siskel was vehemently criticizing it, calling it a slasher film. Think Ebert ultimately gave it ***. Ebert also said Argo was the best film of 2012 and didn't pick up on the brilliant, more mature take on the Middle East in Zero Dark Thirty. Sometimes they get it right; sometimes you disagree...that's the fun of it.

Huh? Ebert saw plenty of value in The Silence of the Lambs. I'm assuming you've seen their review. They talk about it in more detail here.

He bumped up his 3.5 star review to 4/4 in a re-evalutation in 2001. I think his favorite that year was JFK. Thanks for the link though for the refresher.

Based on my experience i would have to guess that the reason is to maul the booklets and make them look like they got too close to a wood chipper?

In a digipack or a 3 disk case? I only have one 3 disk (I think) and the booklet looks fine.

I always felt my tastes were closer to Ebert's than Siskel's. However, Roger's 4-star review of "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" still sticks in my mind as I felt very differently. It's the only film I've walked out on as an adult (although I did make it until 15 minutes before the end. People had started walking out 10 minutes in.)

That film is most certainly not for everybody. It's one of my top ten favorite movies of the 80's.

Default Scanners Criterion blu-ray

I picked up the Criterion blu-ray of David Cronenberg's 1981 classic "Scanners" last weekend. The picture quality is superb and I love the fact that they also included his early film "Stereo" restored as an extra. Has anyone heard if they're getting their hands on "The Brood" at some point? I know that a region B blu-ray of it recently came out in the UK.

They definitely have access to The Brood: it's been available in HD on iTunes for roughly the same time as Scanners, so could appear any time in the near future. Here are a few iTunes screengrabs (SPOILER ALERT: the left hand side of each grab contains film spoilers if you look closely enough):

Cool to hear you're a big runner. I just did a 5.5 mile run (22 laps) at the track earlier tonight in about 46 minutes. How many miles do you usually run on average on a given day? I have yet to run a major marathon but the thought has crossed my mind in recent times.

I was being slightly facetious earlier about my comment on Criterion dating... I was just making that up. I did meet a film teacher a few weeks ago and despite her great deal of knowledge on films and the fact that I went to that same school and majored in "film studies", the date lasted about 27 minutes and was one of the worst I ever experienced. It goes to show, even having common interests in great films can mean nothing.
