I wonder if this is any indication of Criterion eventually re-releasing both Stranger than Paradise and Night on Earth on Blu-ray. They are the only two of his films, aside from Coffee and Cigarettes, that I haven't seen despite my owning them.
Coffee and Cigarettes definitely has its moments and shouldn't be dismissed. I didn't know how much time I had at my disposal one night, so I started it on Netflix knowing that each little episode is self-contained. I didn't expect to finish it, but I did. Was the 2nd time I saw it. Not a great film by any means, but really well acted by some of the parties involved.

I really liked Stranger than Paradise and have seen it a few times. I only caught a few minutes of Night on Earth and really liked what I saw, so I'd say you have some good stuff to look forward to.

24 hours. Just Criterion.com. 50% off MSRP. Free shipping over $50. Limited to stock on hand, once something sells out, no longer part of the sale. Criterion gives you a $50 gift certificate everytime you total $500 of cumulative purchases on their site. Usually very little advance warning of exactly when sales will be.

Yes, I have realized that, but I'm wondering if Amazon will price match everything like last time.

I'm taking a class on Ingmar Bergman this semester and there's a few other European films thrown in. I've seen Bergman mentioned frequently (particularly in this forum) so I'm excited to learn more about the director and watch his films since I haven't seen any...that is until today. We watched Summer with Monika. I liked it. I liked the very simple story, seeing the characters' transformations was interesting and how their relationship evolves.

The film is just gorgeous, there are a lot of beautiful compositions and having only seen stills from The Seventh Seal I could already tell some Bergman shots like those of a bleak, deep black & white sky. The scenes of the two leads in the "paradise" when it's tranquil and innocent and pure, are absolutely perfect, the way the camera moves horizontally and captures Monika's movements around the shore and on the boat. There's other stunning moments like when she is moving through a field when it's dark out, and a long take of the boat moving away from the foreground and disappearing into the background.

Harriet Andersson has that unique beauty where, to me at least, she doesn't strike you as immediately attractive but still grabs your attention, and you fall more for her as time goes by in the film. Her acting was great, as was Lars Ekborg.

I didn't quite love it, and I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe it was too simple, because there isn't a whole lot of plot, particularly in the middle section, and it struggled with pacing here and there and some editing was a little odd to me, some staging of events too. But all in all, I enjoyed it. I would describe it as a character study, kind of poetic, and maybe a cautionary tale. In a way, it's a typical love story, but it's not at the same time.

Awww, man. I was hoping that Criterion had acquired Savage Harvest as a title.

In all sad likelihood, though, nobody will be releasing Savage Harvest on Blu-ray. There's a scene where characters sing in tune to Beatles songs, and the rights to those songs make a Blu-ray release a near-impossibility. Scream Factory verified as such on their Facebook page, I believe.

The Thin Blue Line will work, though!

I think this was the fourth newsletter hint I've ever gotten (assuming it is The Thin Blue Line), the three others being The Three Colors, Ace in the Hole, and Persona, AKA the most obvious clues they've had.

I've never seen The Thin Blue Line, but after researching it now, I look forward to this Criterion release.

Decent story but IMO the film seems dated. I also don't see any replay value for it.
