Another interesting tidbit: Safe won 'Best film of the decade' in the 1999 Village Voice Film Poll.

What film won in 2009? Mulholland Dr.

I love Safe, and I adore Julianne Moore and Todd Haynes in general. Getting that for sure. I doubt I'll pick up the others. But definitely happy to see Safe.

As for the rest of 2014:

Already Purchased:

La Notte
Vivre sa Vie
The Essential Jacques Demy
Persona
Antichrist
Breaking the Waves
Frances Ha

Going to Purchase:

L'Eclisse (somehow missed that earlier)
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
La Dolce Vita
L'Avventura
Safe

Good announcements. Safe isn't my favorite Todd Haines, but is a very good film. I'm so happy to have Time Bandits back in the collection and I've personally been waiting a while for The Night Porter to join the Blu-ray collection. The Kinoshita set looks interesting too.

I'm pretty sure each of those has a market value of ~$70 from what I've seen, so ~$470 isn't a good price for those three (even though they're all fantastic).

The Third Man, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and, to a lesser extent, Pierrot le Fou, on the other hand, seem to be the highest in market value - closer to $200, ~$150, and ~$100, respectively. Either way, it's a great price for all ten!

In this case, me...kinda sorta somewhat. It's not a bad slate, but it doesn't excite me much. The Eclipse set is what interests me the most, but I would have to overcome my resistance to buying DVDs (I'm chagrined to admit that I don't have any of the Eclipse sets; other things just keep jumping the line).

Safe: I saw this in the theater when it came out, and while I thought Moore was terrific, I wasn't overly enamored of the film. I really wanted to like it more than I did, though, so I'd be up for giving it another shot 20 years later.

The Night Porter: Also saw this in the theater when it first came out, and expected to like it more than I did. Liked it quite a bit better when I got the Criterion LD of it (and later, the DVD). But it still doesn't prompt an "I've got to have it on Blu-ray" reaction in me.

Time Bandits: Overall, I'm a fan of Gilliam, but this is one of his lesser efforts, in my opinion. The Robin Hood sequence is the only part that I really found enjoyable. Most of the rest was rather tedious.

I've got Le Circle Rouge, Army of Shadows and The Third Man. Bought Le Circle Rouge around two years ago for £19, and Army of Shadows for £15 (this was when these two titles were in print) The Third Man however costed me £65. Not a bad parlay since used copies are going for $199 (around £122)

my limit for OOP blurays (considering i dont want them to resell) is around 30-40 GBP.. everything above... there is most of the time always a release somewhere else that is not absolutly horrible.

and with 4k on the horizon.. no thanks.

Excited to finally see SAFE for the first time. I like Todd Haynes, and I wonder if this means we might get Far From Heaven eventually.

The Night Porter sounds intriguing. Always welcome to see more female directors represented in the collection.

As much as I love Far From Heaven -- and I do -- it's a fairly good release that we have now. I'd rather see something like Mulholland Dr., etc. where we could really use a top-of-the-line release.

Don't get me wrong: I would NOT complain about a Far From Heaven release.

Still I'm very happy with the box-set and may buy it next year.
Lets have those in Blu-ray instead.

I'm sort of doing the same thing. Keeping it until there is confirmation that the SE will include the theatrical cut along with the director's cut. They pulled that with The Tin Drum (I had to keep the Criterion dvd for the extras and then get the UK edition for the blu version of the theatrical). I like to have both versions if possible.

Aw. Why number 9?

Also, I blind bought Judex and ended up loving it. Have you seen Eyes Without A Face? Same director. Same style but definitely a little more surreal. One of my favorite Criterion titles right now.

Hi Jayembee

Been busy with life recently - moving house, buying a car, starting a hectic job with early starts (who knew there are two 6 o'clocks a day ) as well as doing voluntary work.

I'm now ready to start watching films again

I haven't seen The Tin Drum yet, but I think I will soon.

I generally dislike Wes Anderson's work and I think TLAWSZ is his worst film. It feels incredibly dull and I honestly couldn't wait for it to end.

Judex wasn't too bad, but I dont see it as some is would watch again. Once was enough. I've also seen EWAF a couple of times and I struggle to see the big deal.

Time Bandits will be a good upgrade.

So who here got Eraserhead? Haven't actually watched it yet but this release looks fantastic, from the packaging to the PQ and AQ.

Hunh. I found it to be one of only two WA films that I've seen that I actually liked. (The other is Fantastic Mr. Fox, which I liked, but not a whole lot.)
