I have to admit that I've never heard of any these films, but The Sword of Doom sounds interesting.

Oi, Tatsuya Nakadai is pretty fantastic too!

A minor month for me. I'll stick with my DVDs of Petra, Sword of Doom, and My Winnipeg. If Arrow doesn't gift us with a Sturges box, I'll upgrade Palm Beach Story. La ciénaga looks like an interesting rental.

The Sword of Doom, for sure. It's a cool-looking film that I enjoyed on DVD.

The Palm Beach Story, probably. Sturges has never led me astray.

I'm glad that January is a quiet month here, because Kino Lorber and Twilight Time will be cranking them out that month.

Sword of Doom, Guy Maddin film and Fassbinder film make it an excellent month, in my opinion.

Pretty goodlooking line up, even if I hadn't heard of most of them.

Nice month. I'm in for The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant definitely and maybe Palm Beach Story once I do more reading up on the title, pretty curious about it.

Sword of Doom is a must for me, Mifune has yet to lead me astray.

I have to admit that the Sturges filmography is a fairly substantial blindspot for me. How would you say his films compare to those of Ernst Lubitsch? For me Design for Living and To Be Or Not To Be are two of the most underrated films in the collection (or at least underdiscussed).

The Sword of Doom is a definite buy for me, upgrading from the DVD. Great film!!!

The Palm Beach Story falls in that "potential buy" category for me: a film I wouldn't mind having in my library, but it's not a must buy.

That's all for me for January.

On another note, I get home from work, and a package from Criterion is on my doorstep... my flash sale order has arrived!!!

I think they may be testing the waters with this release. Fingers crossed it does well so they can release more than one a year.

Both directors had an underlying social commentary beneath the laughs. To me the biggest difference is in actual directing style; Sturges was more physical and slapstick while I think Lubitsch used more restraint. IMO both were brilliant.

I've never seen (or heard of) The Sword of Doom, but I'm tempted to buy it solely on the title alone. That's how you title a damn movie.

The first time I watched it I got it from the library based solely on its title (and the fact that it is a Criterion release, of course).

Sword of Doom

I hope Criterion plans to upgrade the Rebel Samurai: Sixties Swordplay Classics boxset at some point.

Me too. I've been skirting Samurai Rebellion in hope of a blu-grade.

It's not so bad. The exchange rate works in your favor, and when you sign up for an account they send you a 20% off coupon. Plus the $10 shipping charge is per order. I ordered three blus for $30 US shipped.

Thanks, should be around $15.86 if i only order that one, have you seen the special features? do you know if they are good?

I still plan to get the Criterion release, but since it is one of my favorites i don't have a problem double dipping for it later on the next flash sale.

Yay! Sturges! Not the first Sturges I would have picked, but I am into it all the same.

So, yes, The Palm Beach Story is a buy.

The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant sounds like we might enjoy it, but I will need to read some reviews I think. The only Fassbinder we've seen is World on a Wire and we didn't enjoy it at all.

My Winnipeg sounds fun, but I can't imagine it being a film we'd rewatch, so hopefully I can get a chance to see it now that I've heard of it.

La Ciénaga doesn't look like a film we'd enjoy.

Pretty sure The Sword of Doom wouldn't be either.

But I am so happy about a Preston Sturges movie that even if it's the only one we get, I am extremely happy with this month!

You could always order it through ImportCDs. It works out to be about $17 with shipping.

This is the response i just got from CC regarding the Leaflets in recent releases:

"This is something we look very closely at when we consider each release. In doing so, we look at the content and the packaging and try to pick what makes the most sense for the film, the extra materials (both video and print) and the packaging. Obviously, we have to figure costs into the equation as well. There’s no set rule and I expect that future releases will still have booklets in the edition as before.

Thanks as always for supporting Criterion."
