Yeah, the Denis film. (both it and Xiao Wu were already credited to Janus at some screenings last year.)

Platform and Unknown Pleasures were also mentioned to be with Janus, if I’m not mistaken. So maybe a Zhangke Jia set!

Looks like Alan Clarke finally gonna be added to collection! Rita, Sue and Bob Too plays with a Criterion/Janus logo. I have the Alan Clarke BBC Box and Scum from Indicator but don’t own the Region B of this one yet. Hoping for a release of Made in Britain as well!

With three Netflix films on the label, and Fincher already with two on the label too, I could see Mank eventually getting the treatment too. It looks like a deviation from his regular look.
Now Panic Room also needs a place, so maybe Criterion might wanna convince Fincher+Sony to get the film on their label.

Maybe the MANK release will give us the rumored CITIZEN KANE edition in the same month.

Please forgive me if I wax poetic, but I wish to honor another Sean Connery performance that I greatly admire: his performance as Mark Rutland in Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie.

I find this film to be Hitchcock's darkest, and in turn, it's perhaps Connery's darkest performance.

According to accounts from that time, Connery was under contract with Eon Productions and was obligated to act in a number of Bond films. He didn't want to be typecast as a spy, so when Eon Productions asked him what he wanted to do, Connery replied, "I want to work with Alfred Hitchcock!" When Connery was offered the role of Mark Rutland, he asked to see the script before making a decision. When Hitchcock's agent told him that Cary Grant never asked to see a script, Connery replied, "I'm not Cary Grant." Sources say that Connery and Hitchcock got along very well on the set.

My favorite Connery film, and one of my favorite of Hitchcock's.

A remastered Marnie from Criterion would be heaven.

Given all the deals Kino has from Universal, I wouldn't be shocked if they tried to get the title.

I'd be absolutely surprised to see even one Universal-owned Hitchcock to be licensed out, though I do think if any would ever get into a boutique's hands, it would be Shadow of a Doubt, Marnie, and/or Frenzy.

Watched 1984 for the first time tonight. I felt it would be a good lead-in to the election no matter who you are rooting for.

Fantastic film. The novel is my 2nd favorite book of all time but I avoided the movie because I didn't want to taint the book in my mind. For instance, it's really hard to read the Lord of the Rings now without me picturing all of the movie actors in my head. I can't stand that.

I can't say it was as good as the book. There's just too much detail and things left out. You'd need a trilogy to really do it justice. That said, it was very faithful to the atmosphere I pictured in my mind and it does the novel justice overall. It's very somber, depressing and extremely well acted. I've never seen the original but the 4K restoration looks amazing.

I opted for the Eurythmics soundtrack but after reading the Wiki, I now kinda regret it since it wasn't the director's vision. Oh well, I will certainly revisit the movie again.

I bought several Criterion movies during the recent sale as blind buys for films I've been wanting to see for a long time.

Up next - Eraserhead, Stalker, Repulsion, For All Mankind, Passion of Joan of Arc and Seven Samurai.

I agree it's a fine film and I'm wondering now that you finally watched it and, hopefully, it did not taint the book for you as you feared, if you would ever be interested in watching the 1956 film version? It's undoubtedly a poor relation to the movie from '84 (never mind the original book), but not without some interest. Given the constraints of subject matter in those days, I thought the '56 version did OK, but it's really more of a curiosity than anything else. Edmond O'Brien was always dependable and he's dependable in it, but still miscast. Jan Sterling was a highlight. I don't know, in its own goofy way, I enjoy it, though wouldn't recommend it per se. Still, I would love to hear your thoughts on it if you can find a watchable copy somewhere.

The 1954 BBC television "play" of 1984, starring Peter Cushing, is well worth watching - and personally, my favourite adaptation along with the Radford/Hurt version.

As was the practice then, it was performed and transmitted "live" (with some pre-recorded footage). It caused considerable controversy, and was even discussed in Parliament in the days after broadcast. The board of the BBC narrowly approved a second performance, which happened a few days after the original had aired. Only this performance was recorded and survives. There are a couple of version on YouTube, one of which is watchable quality.
