Interestingly, although I own Raging Bull, I was not a fan after my first and only viewing, which occurred on 9/21/1993. I gave it two stars out of 5, but provided 3.5 stars for PQ. Perhaps it's time for a second look.

Finally getting this poster framed, it’s been rolled up in my bedroom for a couple of years - bought it from the Criterion online store, and I don’t they they do them anymore

Given the constraints of subject matter in those days, I thought the '56 version did OK, but it's really more of a curiosity than anything else. Edmond O'Brien was always dependable and he's dependable in it, but still miscast. Jan Sterling was a highlight. I don't know, in its own goofy way, I enjoy it, though wouldn't recommend it per se. Still, I would love to hear your thoughts on it if you can find a watchable copy somewhere.
I hear the 1954 BBC production with Peter Cushing, Andre Morell and Donald Pleasence is perhaps the best version out there. It is available on dvd from a label I've never heard of.

The miniseries version of Robert Altman’s Vincent & Theo is currently streaming on Amazon. Hopefully Criterion, or someone could snatch this from Olive and release the theaterical and miniseries!

The Warner digibook for it was such an underrated gem of a release IMHO! The transfer was spectacular and film like, and the audio was a revelation for a film of this vintage on BR back in 2011. I first saw it in the mid 2000s on an old R2 UK DVD release which I used to have, and initially thought it didn't live up to the source material. But I can attest that rewatching it on BR completely elevated the experience for me, and I believe it would be an even more evocative experience on the big screen (hopefully it gets some kind of retrospective re-release at some point).

Also totally agree on the Best Picture assertion, this is traditional nuts and bolts Hollywood Studio filmmaking at it's absolute finest, and in a different decade the film would have stood out a lot more. I also feel that while still under-discussed, the film's reputation has only grown since its initial release.

does anyone know - has there been any rumors about Criterion releasing Rocco and His Brothers? It appears that the Milestone release, which isn't that old, really, is already OOP.

I bought the Masters of Cinema/Eureka release in May. It's region B, but much cheaper than a Criterion release would be. I think anyone should eventually rip their discs to a computer for backup purposes anyway. Blu-ray drives don't care about regions. Masters of Cinema has nice packaging with booklets.

I have a region free player and a dozen or so MoC titles. The impression that the transfer was underwhelming was what stuck with me when the review on this site was originally published a few years ago. A different reviewer reviewed the Milestone release and also gave 4 out of 5 for PQ, which is by no means, a bad score. DVDBeaver seems to slightly favor the MoC release.

I'm considering just getting the MoC because, as you said, it is cheaper, and they are really nice releases.

I guess it sort of is a little bit underwhelming. Not bad at all, though.

Another decade more like! The 70's proritized edgier themes.

The list ain't that impressive anyway. Dog Day Afternoon is the only film on the list that has substance over style. King beats the rest easily.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm regarding The Man Who Would Be King, I disagree with your assessment of the nominated films, which were all monumental films in one way or another.

1975 was flat-out ridiculous. In addition to all of the nominated films + King, you had:

3 Days of the Condor, The Wind and the Lion, Hard Times, Monty Python, The Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Eiger Sanction, Breakheart Pass, Race with the Devil and Dersu Uzala.

One of the strongest years ever.

Been wondering if Criterion will do a Three by Forman set or something with upgrades of BLONDE, FIREMAN’S BALL, and then BLACK PETER which they have.

Crazy how all 5 are better films than King.

It wouldn’t surprise me. Just got two of those from the Arrow Sale. I would really love a release of Taking Off!
