I understand wanting to prevent theft on valuable items but you'd think they'd realize how badly they impact in-store sales at some point.

I'm assuming most people who spend money on Criterion blu-rays are also the same people who would never buy damaged packaging.

Upsetting news regarding B&N policies. They will no longer honor the extra 10% discount for members for Criterion items during the sale and they will no longer carry the box sets in store. You will have to order them to be delivered to home which would mean you’d lose your 10% anyway! If you check their site regarding membership, it states you should get the extra 10% on any item at their lowest price including cafe items.

I don't want a cafe item, I want a criterion!

The reason I ask is because I've been eyeing the Australian Blu of HANGING ROCK, which would save me about $8.00 and has all the extras I need from this movie except the bonus film. Otherwise, the Criterion extras seem awfully repetitive and I would be just as happy with the Aussie Blu. Thanks in advance!
And not to derail further, but I have a UK copy for sale that includes extras not on the Criterion, including a 2 hour doc. PM if you're interested.

I haven't gotten the extra 10% during the last couple of sales when I went to the box store. I've been ok with that as 50% off is a huge markdown. I have most of the Criterions that I want. I'm looking forward to the Fellini set and will buy a few others but I'm pretty much caught up on the movies Criterion has released.

Criterion really nailed that set. One of their best. Hopefully they can do the same with The Other Side of the Wind.

About a bit more than halfway through with Joseph Losey's The Servant (1963) and I absolutely love it. I always had a small crush on Dirk Bogarde ever since I saw Victim (1961) years ago. This second film I'm watching by him is also exhilarating and terrific. James Fox also reminds me very closely of his brother, Edward Fox, as well.

Very excited to finish this tonight and watch Accident (1967) as a Losey/Bogarde Double Bill as well!

All I can say is that I hope now that Criterion did a deal with StudioCanal that The Servant (1963) and The Trial will finally get their US Blu-ray Debut. Same with Mr. Klein (1976), Baxter (1989), and all the other Canal classics they've been releasing the past 3-4 years in Region B Territories. As a Region A person, I feel like I'm missing out on an entirely different realm of future personal favorites and classics from afar.

"Accident" and "The Servant" are fantastic films, as is "The Go-Between", another Losey-Pinter collaboration. I'm a big Losey fan, extremely interesting filmmaker. A few other Losey films I would recommend:

Secret Ceremony
Figures in a Landscape
Time Without Pity
The Criminal
The Romantic Englishwoman
Eve
The Prowler

Wanted to get the Vardas, BRD, and some other sets. But freaking B&N w/ their damned spider wire. It ruins the sets. I'm amazed the Lee set wasn't wired up.

Due to the spider wire issue...I ask, how does B&N handle the packaging if you have it sent to actual store? Like do I have better change of a non mucked up case if I do it that way? I've had them ship directly to me before and it was iffy w/ the packaging. Hell, how is Criterion w/ their packaging? Cuz I'll wait for their next sale on the site if they package well.
I had no idea Varda was this popular or well known with the American public

Do you think that Capernaum will ever get a Criterion release?
I would rank it as one of the besg films made this decade so far & certainly worthy of the Criterion label
The Sony disc looks to be OK but could definitely be improved upon I think

If I remember correctly, the Bergman set is supplied in its own outer box before the addition of retailer packaging. When it was released, there were some posts from people who did not receive it this way, but most did. I bought in-store, but I believe the way you received it does not reflect additional packaging by B&N. But a good thing to happen anyway.

I had mine shipped during the November sale during which it was released. It came double boxed and the inner box had a sticker with its release date. If I remember it said something along the lines of “don’t sell until nov...” Pleased with the double box!

I really thought this news would blow this thread up. It's been one of my most wanted upgrades for years!

Never heard of this title but I'll take a look since it's on the Criterion Channel.

February titles have already been announced. I can’t say it’s the most exciting lineup I’ve ever seen.

Intriguing month, and I'm in for the lot. A nice variety and bringing some stuff attention. And lovely to see Bahrani make a double appearance in the collection. The titles might not be sexy or flashy, but it's a good set.
