It’s a very unique reaction to the film to be honest, almost anyone who has seen the film that I came across had some level of emotional reaction to it or at least towards the main character.

I expected the same since The Apu Trilogy elicited an entirely different reaction. They are some of my favorite films, but The Music Room didn’t do it for me.

Roy is a feudalist that believes in being born into aristocracy and elevated culture. He detests the nouveau riche like Ganguly who've worked their way into money, but have not had the cultured upbringing he has had, and resents that Ganguly thinks he can buy his way into that milieu. I thought in his formal way Roy was fairly affectionate towards his wife when she was alive, and not cruel to his servants (who have across generations been tied to his family, which is why they too feel antagonistic towards the upstart Ganguly).

Ray creates an empathy for Roy primarily through his adoration of the cultural arts - his hiring of the artist for the last soiree, even at the cost of his own complete ruin - is not merely a rich man's thumbing off the upstart, but a true art lover's last gesture of patronage, for without it he has nothing in life.

Any chance we’ll see an upgrade for A Canterbury Tale?

I think there's always a chance for another new restoration of Powell & Pressburger film as long as Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker are alive, though I guess I Know Where I'm Going would come first since she was finishing it in early 2019: https://www.theguardian.com/film/201...ellowship-2019

Quote:
Schoonmaker’s aim, as she finishes restoration of Powell’s 1945 Scottish romance, I Know Where I’m Going, is to persuade young directors to pay attention to film history.

Finally got a chance to go to B&N and buy myself some. I was planning to go wild on it but I realized I only brought $40 in cash and had the rest of my money somewhere at home. I was going with a friend so he managed to grab 7-9 titles while I only kept with two, Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Blind buy) and Punch Drunk Love (One of my favorite romances I discovered of the last few years). I managed to find the rest of my money after so I hope I can eventually spend at least a few more later on.

Definitely going to spend on Ghost Dog, which I haven't seen but from my love for Le Samourai and especially Branded to Kill, with a strong recommendation by a friend, I'll have to definitely pick it up. Couldn't find Muriel and Night and Fog, which I expected to not sell out quick. Also need to find myself a good copy of Jeanne Dielman and the Tati and Demy set as well. So much titles I couldn't find today because my B&N's Criterion section minimized by 50%, even though I thought Criterion is one of the reasons why many people still shop at B&N :/

I don't know about what you're going after but right now, I see Parasite, Come and See, and a few other titles in stock still. Although, I can't see the coupons anymore sadly, which I was just gonna buy some on Amazon today.

I'm in Australia and I am having the same issue. Guess Amazon are not shipping to Australia maybe due to COVID. I ended up having my orders shipped to ShopMate (Australia Post mail forwarder). Once I changed my address from my Australian address to ShopMate's U.S. address then everything appeared in stock. Unfortunately, the ShopMate shipping price is expensive but I've been waiting all year so I ended up paying the shipping cost.
