But yeah, the packaging is atrocious. It's so badly done that the "newspaper" booklet was bend twice because of it, all beat up. It's poor packaging design. I wouldn't mind as much if this was sold cheaper but at a 100$ canadian before taxes, I expected sturdier packaging. I'm not sure what is so wrong with expecting packaging that doesn't get beat up so easily. :/ Criterion's booklets also seem so disappointing in the last few years. The worst was for Night of the living dead and the two Police story movies where the essays were printed behind a poster haha. It was hell to read and who would put up a poster with an essay behind? I was very happy with their War of the worlds release (beautiful cover, sturdy case, great transfer, great extras) but again underwhelming booklet that was a cheap pamphlet with only four pages of writing. Compared to some of the beautiful booklets other company provides, I feel like Criterion needs to try harder. Look at Arrow's special editions. They have sturdy cardboard slipcovers, two choices of artwork (original poster and new artwork) and a beautiful 40 pages booklet. I feel like Criterion are still stuck in the 90's sometimes when it comes to packaging. Last edited by fred25_Ca; 12-01-2020 at 03:23 PM. |

As for special features, I occasionally watch them when they are in a foreign language with English subtitles. However, when the special features are spoken in English, Criterion will not provide subtitles. In fact, if there is an English speaking person and a foreign language speaking person in an interview they'll provide the subtitles for the foreign language only. ![]() As a deaf person I contacted Criterion about this and they basically told me that it would cost too much to provide the additional subtitles. ![]() ![]() |

I don't open all the booklets either. Always just to look at the pictures. Some have nice production stills. |

They need to step it up. Few get solid packaging but most are flimsy and unacceptable. I don't see Indicator using the cheap stuff. Even Severin upgraded more solid packaging. VS has been top quality since the first set and following that to their VSA line Some sets I'm not likely to even buy because the packaging is awful. I'll just watch them on the channel when I can. |

Any rumors if we’re getting Criterion releases of this year’s Netflix films? Definitely down for DA 5 BLOODS and MANK, not quite sure of THE TRIAL OF CHICAGO 7.

I sympathize with your difficulties, but this is true of all boutique labels. None of them provide HOH subtitles for extras, because it does comparatively cost a good deal given that they operate on much smaller volumes than the major studios do. They have to pay the same whether they sell 3000 units or 30000.

Watched Bringing up Baby yesterday & absolutely loved it!
Can't believe that this was a flop when first released If Criterion had the rights to this film, do you think it would make a good release? |

For 2020 yes: (x) Roma; (x) Marriage Story, (x) The Irishman, now just waiting on ( ) Atlantics. Suppose the choices will depend on which will likely have an Oscar run, and would be announced after nominees are also announced to gather publicity in both counts? Parasite CC was announced when there’s already a blu-ray of it released...

^Also American Factory from Netflix, which somehow bafflingly won the best documentary award at the Oscars. I'd probably rank it as the third or 4th best doc of the nominees. It wasn't even the best Netflix doc nominated in my opinion (Edge of Democracy being the other).
