I'm not too sure if Wes has some particular clause in the contracts he makes, but it seems to be case since every film of his, regardless of company, ends up on Criterion.

You mean from last years new letter? Or is there a new one I don't know about?

So Geekgab an insider on social media (who so far has been pretty reliable) mentioned today that Criterion will finally be releasing 4K discs this year and that they will be region locked.

He also mentioned expect more Netflix films from Criterion. Hopefully Mank and Buster Scruggs happen.

That's...not possible within the spec.

What have they been proven right about?

Pretty much everything. Anytime they post dates, digital bits posts it a few days later.

I also remain skeptical that they'd region lock their UHDs. The notion that a reason Criterion hasn't released any UHD is because they are region free is one of the dumbest things I can think of. With such a small market/high cost of production, why would they intentionally handicap their sales potential.

Well damn that’s pretty exciting. Very curious how Criterion will handle this format. Is this insider on Twitter?

Someone asked that very question to Geek Gab and they mentioned that they have to follow what the owner of the films mandate. While odd, I could see a company like Netflix making that demand.

I’m gonna wait and see before I blindly believe them. Someone else “definitively” said Criterion would go 4K last year and the year before.

I guess if enough people have guessed enough times. They’ll bound to be right eventually.

Also the Digital Bits has used this site as a reference before and I don’t trust most of the yahoo’s on here.

Yeah, they could be wrong and who knows what their sources are, but so far they have been pretty reliable is all I'm saying. Either way, I'm just hopeful for possible more Netflix films.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Criterion will not go 4K for physical media. I don't see it happening, for a number of reasons, which includes the dying physical market, regional/country limitations, cost, and several others issues. I could see them releasing 4K movies on the Criterion Channel. I think that's the only way we are going to see Criterion 4K releases.

Am I wrong? Maybe. Am I happy? No. But that's how I see it.

I've should have been more clear the reason I don't think they will go 4K as I can't see Criterion wanting to go along with the nonsense of some rights holders wanting them to lock their UHDs. I can't imagine Criterion would ever go long with angering their customers that way.

The main reason I want Criterion to go 4K is so I don't have to hear people bombard every facet of Criterion social media and these boards with the question "why no 4K?" At this point it's actively starting to drive me insane.

I tend to doubt if a licensor could force a licensee to do something against the UHD specs (in this case region lock.) For proof I offer Second Sight's Dawn of the Dead UHD. If Richard Rubenstein could have forced them to region lock the UHD, like he forced them to limit their website sales to the UK only, he would have.

On to Ketflix, there are two announced Netflix titles (American Factory and Atlantics) that haven't been released and Rolling Thunder Revue, which wasn't announced by Netflix, is coming in a couple of weeks, so it is safe to assume that there will be some more Netflix titles this year. I could see Okja and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs getting released.
