I haven't any predictions, but plenty of wishes...

After Hours, Bringing Out the Dead, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Who's That Knocking at My Door? .... would all be most welcome.

Accatone, Mamma Roma (upgrade), The Gospel According to Matthew, Hawks and Sparrows, Oedipus Rex, or Porcile would all be welcome.

Burn!

Drugstore Cowboy

Bad Lieutenant (1992; Ferrara/Keitel)

The Funeral (Ferrara/Walken)

The Unbearable Lightness of Being and/or Henry & June

Hud

At Play in the Fields of the Lord

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover

Empire of Passion (upgrade)

And probably 200 more, LOL.

I would love to see either La Bête Humaine or Le Deuxième Souffle. Also, The Bedford Incident as they've already released Fail-Safe and Dr. Strangelove.

Just some upgrades but the recent comments here dashed my hopes on Knife in the Water so I’ll pin my hopes on the two Lean adaptations of Dickens.

The most obvious issue some people have with these releases is that they generate income for Polanski, and there's plenty of good reason to not want to financially support a sex offender.

This consideration would obviously not apply whenever Polanski dies.

This isn't to say that I necessarily agree in all cases (it's particularly debatable when dealing with such an inherently collaborative medium), but it's hardly misguided to question whether we should be giving money to people like Polanski to support their careers.
I appreciate your response, and absolutely get what you’re saying in regards to why some boycott a film Polanski directed.

I ultimately respect whatever decision one makes. It’s one of those questions that’s simply not going to have a clear cut and dry “right” answer. Why?

Say that Criterion has acquired distribution rights to The Pianist, and they release a beautifully packaged blu-ray edition. Take it one step further; The Pianist, as a new release, is the headliner of Criterion’s initial foray into UHD. They release it in a 4K boxed set including Tess, Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby, Macbeth, Cul-du-sac, and a newly remastered Knife in the Water. I would imagine the collection would have tremendous appeal.

For the person deciding not to buy the set, because they don’t want to put money in Polanski’s pocket, if asked how I could buy it, I would remind them that in doing so, I am supporting anyone else who worked on these movies, and still receive residuals. I’m not knowledgeable how that works for older films; perhaps that is a bad example.

Consider a new movie, directed by Polanski, one that is receiving rave critical reviews, and is being mentioned as an early contender for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In choosing to boycott the film, while yes, it does effectively cut off a revenue stream to a man that we would all agree belongs in jail. But what about all the other people who have been part of the filming, production and distribution process. By not going to the cinema to see the film, or, more appropriately, given where we still are with the pandemic, by not renting or buying the film, far more people than Polanski are being negatively impacted.

I’m able to balance all this out in my mind via the realization that Polanski is one part of a much larger group of people. My choice is to ultimately support the work of the talented individuals who worked tirelessly to make that film a reality. Unfortunately, as the film director, he is a highly visible face when the film is being promoted. Again, there’s just no easy answer to this.

One justification could be that by such boycotting or shaming of the film they are also pressuring both co-workers and studios to not be involved with or support projects featuring the tainted individual in a leading capacity (obviously, individual crew members may have to take what work they get, but studios / production companies can take a stance based on what they feel either ideologically or from a business sense). It is akin to a processing of social outcasting by which an individual is made to feel that it is better to go to jail and take the medicine than be a free man in a world that shuns him/her.

That is assuming that he would even get money from dvd sales of his old films that he was not a producer or co-owner of. I'd wager he wouldn't make a cent. My understanding is that, unless a director owns a film in whole or part or acts as a producer in some capacity, they only get paid residuals for physical media sales if they are big time directors. The others get peanuts, if anything at all.

In short, refusing to buy a reissue of Knife In The Water, for example, probably wouldn't even deprive Polanski of a single cup of coffee in any given week. Refusing to 'financially support' him is therefore meaningless under these specific circumstances. It's good for the soul perhaps, for some, but it is ultimately a road to nowhere. Refusing to support him to prevent him from working again and/or to destroy his legacy is a different matter though. That could have an effect over time if enough people do it.

Criterion Five I Would Like to See for Today

Today, there should be another announcement from our friends at Criterion Collection, but instead of listing my predictions, I thought that it would be fun to list five films (off the top of my head) that I would love to see announced, so here goes:

1. Greed (1924, von Stroheim)
2. After Hours (1985, Scorsese)
3. The Last Adventure (1967, Enrico)
4. Bringing Up Baby (1938, Hawks)
5. Pickup on South Street (1953, Fuller)

I ask each poster to name five films (off the top of your head) that you would love to see.

The ones I'd like to see most at the moment are:

After Hours or Bringing Out the Dead
Dersu Uzala
ANY Pasolini
Burn!
The Piano

I want all the Mike Leigh. I think Paramount would have the rights now to Happy Go Lucky? I know they license some stuff with Criterion, but I don't know if they'd license out their newly acquired Miramax titles

Career Girls & High Hopes are definitely future criterion releases; just a matter of when...
