I ultimately respect whatever decision one makes. It’s one of those questions that’s simply not going to have a clear cut and dry “right” answer. Why? Say that Criterion has acquired distribution rights to The Pianist, and they release a beautifully packaged blu-ray edition. Take it one step further; The Pianist, as a new release, is the headliner of Criterion’s initial foray into UHD. They release it in a 4K boxed set including Tess, Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby, Macbeth, Cul-du-sac, and a newly remastered Knife in the Water. I would imagine the collection would have tremendous appeal. For the person deciding not to buy the set, because they don’t want to put money in Polanski’s pocket, if asked how I could buy it, I would remind them that in doing so, I am supporting anyone else who worked on these movies, and still receive residuals. I’m not knowledgeable how that works for older films; perhaps that is a bad example. Consider a new movie, directed by Polanski, one that is receiving rave critical reviews, and is being mentioned as an early contender for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In choosing to boycott the film, while yes, it does effectively cut off a revenue stream to a man that we would all agree belongs in jail. But what about all the other people who have been part of the filming, production and distribution process. By not going to the cinema to see the film, or, more appropriately, given where we still are with the pandemic, by not renting or buying the film, far more people than Polanski are being negatively impacted. I’m able to balance all this out in my mind via the realization that Polanski is one part of a much larger group of people. My choice is to ultimately support the work of the talented individuals who worked tirelessly to make that film a reality. Unfortunately, as the film director, he is a highly visible face when the film is being promoted. Again, there’s just no easy answer to this. |

In short, refusing to buy a reissue of Knife In The Water, for example, probably wouldn't even deprive Polanski of a single cup of coffee in any given week. Refusing to 'financially support' him is therefore meaningless under these specific circumstances. It's good for the soul perhaps, for some, but it is ultimately a road to nowhere. Refusing to support him to prevent him from working again and/or to destroy his legacy is a different matter though. That could have an effect over time if enough people do it. Today, there should be another announcement from our friends at Criterion Collection, but instead of listing my predictions, I thought that it would be fun to list five films (off the top of my head) that I would love to see announced, so here goes:
1. Greed (1924, von Stroheim) 2. After Hours (1985, Scorsese) 3. The Last Adventure (1967, Enrico) 4. Bringing Up Baby (1938, Hawks) 5. Pickup on South Street (1953, Fuller) I ask each poster to name five films (off the top of your head) that you would love to see. ![]() |

I want all the Mike Leigh. I think Paramount would have the rights now to Happy Go Lucky? I know they license some stuff with Criterion, but I don't know if they'd license out their newly acquired Miramax titles
Career Girls & High Hopes are definitely future criterion releases; just a matter of when... |
