Oh NO!!!
I didn’t say I wouldn’t watch the film at all, I just won’t buy Criterion’s blu ray. Two different things.

While I do think the Last Emperor Blu-ray from Criterion looks good, it is annoying that's it's the wrong aspect ratio. Any idea why that happened in the first place?

I read it was Vittorio Storaro's decision.

Storaro himself cooked it up: Univisium.

He did it to a few of his movies. Studios eventually stopped consulting him.

Yeah, it reads like he had a hobby horse that he would not stop riding. That can get old.

Here's how I'm currently leaning:

Rushmore
House
Punch-Drink Love
Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films

The above will all be blind-buys. Rushmore will be the first Wes Anderson film I've ever seen. House came highly and often recommended to me by other Criterion enthusiasts, while PDL I've just wanted to see for a while now.

I am trying to keep the price tag for this flash sale under $200. Who feels like helping me decide on one more film to add? These are my current contenders, all films I've never seen before:

Videodrome
Dazed and Confused
Blow Out
Rosemary's Baby
Mulholland Dr.
Come and See

Outside of De Palma, I have pretty much zero experience with the director's of these films, save for Cronenberg's The Fly (great film), and Lynch's The Elephant Man, which I was probably too young to fully grasp when I watched it decades ago.

Get Mulholland Drive. It's a masterpiece

I'd recommend Come and See.

It's essentially a long descent into a nightmare, and it's hugely compelling.

Completely missing the point. Most of us want to see a film in its OAR, as theatrically exhibited. The 2.00:1 AR is revisionist tinkering: Storraro claimed later that the film was specifically shot to be framed in that ratio, even though it was not an exhibition standard at the time. From memory, one of the film's producers separately claimed it was shot for exhibition at 2.35:1.

Bertolucci deferred to Storaro - hence the 2.00:1 ratio on the Criterion release.

And Coppola (thankfully) reverted to the OAR for Apocalypse Now.

That's a lot of blind-buy's, not that I haven't made my fair share. Here's my two cents on your terrific picks:

Videodrome - essential Cronenberg; cool, unique & surreal, but The Fly is not a good litmus test
Dazed and Confused - comedy is usually too subjective to recommend; let the trailer be your guide
Blow Out - super safe De Palma pick
Rosemary's Baby - horror classic; pretty hard to warn against
Mulholland Dr. - essential Lynch; brilliant & amazing, but again, far more surreal than TEP
Come and See - extremely violent & brutal; powerful if it doesn't turn you away

Definitely picking up the Bunuel 3 film set, also trying to choose three between:

The Ascent
Death by Hanging
Girlfriends
Day for Night
Broadcast News

All blind buys except the Bunuel films.

I'm buying the Fellini set for sure and probably Bunuel and maybe the Zatoichi set. Also The Parallax View and the DVD of The Pornographers. I should be getting a coupon during this spree so I'll use it. Moonstruck, The Irishman and Crash are other options as well.

Are we still expecting it today? No "flash sale incoming" email from Criterion as yet.

Swo17 on the Criterionrumors forum dates he got the email. I haven't yet, but it looks like tomorrow is confirmed.

I think Criterion's site crashed a little bit last time, so be warned for that.

What time?

Is it safe to load my cart now and just press "checkout" when the time comes? Or do I need to have everything bookmarked to add to my cart after prices drop?

Never done one of these through Criterion before, but 400 Blows is OOS everywhere I can see that'll ship here and isn't inordinately expensive, so I might as well indulge.
