I would guess pretty good, especially for La Strada Since that’s probably the best known film in the set that doesn’t already have a blu-ray.

Yeah, it would be a personal dream release for me. I would like to see a Kitano film in the collection at some point.

Heaven Can Wait as well as Ferris Bueller's Day Off were rumored to be with Criterion at some point. Not sure if Paramount wanted/traded them back, or Criterion finished the transfers and extras but are yet to announce anything.

The Philadelphia Experiment is a Lakeshore owned title, and was rumored to be with ether Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, or Scorpion.

Strange Days has issues because Fox and Lightstorm (James Cameron's company) being expensive/difficult to work with. Kathryn Bigelow also wants an advance/oversee and reportedly also wants to recut the film to her liking (the theatrical version was butchered by nervous executives to avoid an NC-17 stamp of death).

Yes, exactly, so definitively stating that they aren't going out of print would be inadvisable.

Quit trying to be contrary just for the sake of it.

I'm not?

They may or may not go out of print. There's no real way of knowing at this stage. It's not like Criterion is a label that gives advance warning of these things.

This site says yes.
Reddit says no.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see. 😊

Review up for Secrets & Lies over at the Beaver. The bitrate obsessed Mr. Tooze describes it thus, "As well as a higher bitrate over the 2014 Channel 4 1080P, the image is brighter, warmer flesh tones and a tad sharper. Overall, it looks superior."

The screenshots he has posted don't reveal to me this increased sharpness. Plus in the first shot there is a green push (compare the colors of Blethlyn's white jacket and Jean-Baptiste's black coat, both of which have a patina of green in the Criterion transfer). It's not pervasive across the other shot, so maybe it represents the effect of a fluorescent light and is the director's intention.

I had to laugh. I realized that one of the "Fox titles" I got during the flash sale -- The Story of Temple Drake -- was actually not a Fox title. It was, in fact, a Paramount title. But Criterion licensed it not from Paramount, but from Fox. I'm not sure how it ended up in Fox's hands, unless they had a hand in MOMA's restoration of the film.

I've got a whole day of waiting and to think which film to watch. Hopefully I get the mail at the usual time but who knows anymore.

rewatch AK's Dreams or watch Dragon Inn for the first time. I know it will be a choice whichever to choose.

"Woman in the Dunes" a good pick up? I've been wanting to dip my toes into some classic cinema. Lots of SOV horror movies and exploitations films in my rotation and I need some variety.

It's a great movie to be sure, a brilliant modern (for the time) Japanese film collaboration between writer Kobo Abe and director Hiroshi Teshigahara. It has some elements of horror as well, albeit in a psychological vein.

Woman in the Dunes is existential horror. Don't blind buy expecting any actual scares or chills. It's a movie of ideas, moods, and textures.

I wish they could upgrade the boxset. I want that and plus the BD of woman in the Dunes. which I'm glad I can rent from my library until I decide to get one or both versions.

The Story Of Temple Drake was bought by Fox in the late 50s/early 60s when they prepared their own version of the William Faulkner source novel. That was not uncommon in those days. Universal’s Waterloo Bridge and Paramount’s Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde were each bought by MGM in the late 30s, which is why they’re both Warner home video titles now. Paramount’s A Farewell To Arms was bought by Warner Bros. for an abandoned remake, and then sold to David O. Selznick for his remake, and then acquired by Disney with the rest of his portfolio.

I’ve learned from ordering from them in the past to expect to have to request replacement packing on digipaks most of the time... 9/10 they are always damaged. I try to only buy them at B&N during the sale

Yes, I'm aware that that happens often. I'd forgotten that Fox remade it under the novel's title.

I found it to be a fascinating watch. The Dunes in the title are an entity in themselves. They seem to be alive with their movements and changing shapes.

I wish they would upgrade this whole set. The marriage of Abe/Teshigahara produced several fantastic movies, not just Woman in the Dunes.
