I thought Criterion had a deal with IFC, I've been putting off buying the import version of 'The Painted Bird' - because I'm convinced if and when I decide to plunk down my money for the import, the next day Criterion will announce the US release. I wonder what's holding up 'California Split' - it'd be great to get the complete version of the movie that's been up on Amazon Prime (and with Altman's commentary track that was on the first DVD release of the movie). |

Would love to see Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid or The Getaway. Would also be nice to get All the President's Men how is supposed to look. Any Spike Lee or David Lynch. Also want to see The Killer of Sheep.

Bought some bourbon and sat down with Le Doulos via Kino's release last night...there's nothing like spending time in Melville's singularly dark, esoteric gangster universe. I wish this guy made quadruple the amount of movies he did, but perhaps it's the relative compactness of his filmography which makes it all the more special.
Anyhow, I kept being reminded how Criterion needs to get off their ass and update Le Deuxième Souffle aready. It's the lone Melville crime epic I don't own in HD and it bothers me. ...and if they or anybody else could get his two two unreleased films out there (which includes his final collaboration with Belmondo), that'd be terrific! ![]() |

I just hope for some stuff that interests me, personally. Criterion pretty much nearly always releases good/great quality films, but they aren't always things that I subjectively get excited about. I hope for something off of my wishlist. ![]() |

It is a GREAT film. But, I'd actually double dip for a US release, particularly from Criterion. It seems a perfect fit for Criterion, as well. |

WOW.
Just finished part 2 of Until the End of the World and was blown away. I felt an amazing sense of hopefulness for all the characters esp. the main female character, Claire. [Show spoiler] I honestly had no words to describe the feeling I had after watching nearly 5 hours of this film (in 2 separate nights). Part 1 is rather different than part 2 and though I admired the pure "road film mentality" in the 1st part, the 2nd part really took the external road movie perspective and made it the inner road movie inside the internal personalities of each of the main characters. And how much more personal and internal can one get than showing one's dreams. It's fitting that Wim Wenders' office used to be next to David Lynch's, and the fact that Elvis Presley's "Summer Kisses, Winter Tears" was produced by Lynch for this film and soundtrack, is ironic since both directors share the dream motif-connection in many of their films. Maybe dreamy is the best adjective to describe this movie though. It's dreamy because the story and characters exist in spite of an apocalyptic subtext that is never shown (nor needed to be) in the movie. Perhaps that would be the stuff of nightmares, a rogue nuclear satellite orbiting the planet that is about to crash land on earth. But the movie was really hopeful to me. The characters were nearly perfect for the story (and the casting maybe even more), and the music is what elevated this to the highest art any film director could achieve. For those cinephiles that are patient enough to watch this nearly 5 hour cut, they will be deeply rewarded for their efforts. And last but not least, though this story only took place about 10 years into the future (not an easy feat), the "HDVS" technology used in both the making of the film and in the actual story was surreal for the fact that the human behavior towards the end of the film mirrored a bit of today's addictions with our phones and tablets. The characters were walking around with these boxy screened gadgets much like most people do today with their smartphones. And in this story, a few of these characters couldn't get their eyes off their screens. Incredible how this movie predicted future human behavior in that way. This is a bold and brave film, a movie one can meditate to, one that can be viewed as pure arthouse cinema without feeling like a movie snob. Unlike many of today's major Hollywood films that has not an ounce of fat on them (or at least an ounce of reflection and introspection), this is a movie to "take in" and absorb and not feel like its in any rush to get from the first minute to the final minute. That's the beauty of great independent films, where the director is able to control his or her artistic vision without it resorting to an amusement park thrill ride where every second is so tightly wound around a weak story and shallow characters lacking any human depth, that a movie can sweep one away into another mindset, another perspective, another universe of its own, getting happily lost in a nebulous dream. I even experienced an incredible epiphany when Max Von Sydow's character admitted he never saw himself in dreams. I told myself: "wow, I never thought of that before, but its true as I've never seen myself in a dream either". For all of that insight and more, I am grateful to have the privilege to watch and experience incredible cinema such as this. Last edited by jw007; 03-15-2021 at 06:29 AM. |
