An excellent list of films. I'm so happy to see Pariah get the release. It's one I mentioned a few months back.

i remember watching all of the human condition maybe 15 years ago while at university. i liked it a lot back then, and nakadai is one of my favorite actors - but - my views were pretty different back then. i'm not one for overt political messages in films anymore and i don't remember the films well enough now, but does the human condition push for a specific ideology?

The thing about Human Condition is that it shows a lot of different perspectives. It starts off with Nakadai as this naive scholar who thinks things have to be done one way and that violence isn't the way. However, by the end of the film he ends up killing, not as a matter of war, but as a matter of justice/revenge.

I think the overall message is that war is hell.

Nice announcements.

I have heard good things about Pariah, but haven’t seen it.

I’m most excited about Pickup On South Street finally getting upgraded, Streetwise (a really great doc) joining the collection and finally getting an upgrade of The Human Condition.

I still want them all though.

A good time for Black cinema with this and Marlon Riggs

I think it will just be the big ones too. Of course Tokyo Olympiad had precedence with being a DVD title, and having Kon Ichikawa's name attached.

I understand the history with the laserdisc but in the year 2021 I don't think the female filmmakers we should be celebrating should be actual Nazis.
Yeah, that's the thing that has me wondering it will show up by itself.

I already have the individual Eureka version of Pickup on South Street and the Fuller at Fox set so I will sit out grabbing the Criterion until reviews. That's the only title that remotely interests me but its alright as it allows me to catch up on new pre-orders and sales.

Since they've been dealing with Netflix lately, that's actually a possibility.

As for Pariah, I'm surprised that the original short film isn't included. I'm guessing that there's no footage in the short that isn't in the feature, but still...

Once it gets to Australia though, the story starts to gel. William Hurt’s performance is probably my favourite out of any of the other movies I’ve seen him in.
I didn't sense any "causal" racism (do you mean the word "casual" instead?), but I was surprised there wasn't a mention in the credits about Aboriginals being portrayed on film and if they are later deceased (usually movies today mention this as a disclaimer before the movie begins or afterwards). There was a lot of Sam Neill in the movie but I'm guessing in the shorter version he was cut out of many scenes as I recall he wasn't as visible. William Hurt definitely performed above and beyond here though.

Besides Spellbound, would there be any other Alfred Hitchcock titles Criterion would be releasing? I know quite a few were released from them on Laserdisc and DVD. Only would need to buy The Lodger, Notorious, Rebecca, and an eventual release of Spellbound. Probably would still need to check DVDCompare.net if any omit anything from the DVD counterparts.
Any suggestions? The "sales" don't matter much since second hand or third hand is more than sufficient regarding better prices.

Yeah, sort of. It was distributed by USA films originally, which eventually merged with Universal Focus to become Focus Features.

Not such a great month for my tastes (I'll only be getting Pickup on South Street), but I did get very excited for a second when I misread Visions of Eight as Visions of Light.

Visions of Light: The Art of Cinematography needs a blu-ray release!!

Personally, I would have preferred Samurai Rebellion, but this is still awesome.

I'd be happy with that, but outside of Harakiri, I consider the Human Condition Trilogy to be his best work. Would love Samurai Rebellion at some point too.

I don't have the MoC release of Pickup on South Street, so I'll definitely get the Criterion at some point.

I do have the Arrow release of The Human Condition, and will be interested to see how much of an upgrade it is before thinking about a double-dip.

Glad to see Visions of Eight getting a standalone, although I have it in the set.

The Marlon Riggs set has certainly piqued my interest after working on the database entries for each film.
