Now, there are also plenty of people who find Irma Vep attractive for a very different and actually very simple reason. The reason is Maggie Cheung wearing a tight latex suit that looks almost as sexy as the one Michelle Pfeiffer put on in Batman Returns. You would never hear these people discuss the intellectual chatter in Irma Vep because to them it is nothing but a smoke screen, which is why they see right through it. The few scenes where Cheung steps in front of the camera and temporarily becomes that famous character from Les Vampires validates the existence of Irma Vep. As far as the people that I am describing to you are concerned, it is utterly irrelevant whether the film is good or bad. They are just content that it exists in its current form.

Here's the promised revelation about the two groups of people that like Irma Vep: they don't see the film differently. They are both attracted to it because of the footage with Cheung doing her part in the weird remake. But only the people from the second group have the courage to admit it.
What the ****ing shit.

Japan is probably the best option for now (Spanish has forced subs.) It's StudioCanal so in theory they could release it more widely and I'm not sure why they haven't. Although US DVD rights seems to me MGM (it's an AVCO Embassy title)?

This has been something I've wondered about for years... it really is surprising that with Jack Nicholson alone that a label wouldn't want to pick this up. I'm hoping Shout/Criterion/Arrow release it instead of Kino though

A few years ago I also started to snatch up Sony PC Blu-rays... I think from the major studios, these are my favorite blurays I own. And their catalog is quite tremendous. THey have a number of DVD only titles I would love for them to upgrade as well

I got a great deal on "12 Angry Men" and "Fail Safe", both on Criterion BDs, for just 30 for both!

i emailed criterion about the copy of tree of life i received that had damage on the slipcover. one corner was smashed up and it was hard to access the discs. anyway i was expecting a replacement cover at best - but they are sending a brand new copy instead. excellent customer service!

I would buy the release from Japan if it weren't an outrageous price. But yeah, the movie itself still holds a lot of power even though it's a movie of it's time, culturally.

Why can't they go back into TV? like the laserdisc releases. I think it was the Addams Family that was released.

I am still hoping for some more Pasolini releases from Criterion.

They are near the top of my wishlist every month.

I have most things of his imported already, but I'd love to see US Region A Criterion releases for films like, "Accatone", "The Gospel According to Matthew", "Oedipus Rex", "Porcile", et al., and I'd love a BD release of "Mamma Roma", as that is the only one of his narrative features to not yet have a blu ray anywhere in the world, yet.

They released five discs under the "Criterion Television" sub-imprint:

I Love Lucy
Tanner '88 Volume 1
Tanner '88 Volume 2
Tanner '88 Volume 3
The Addams Family

The Lucy and Addams releases had only 2 episodes each, plus supplements. They never intended to do an ongoing release of either series.

Tanner '88 they also released on DVD.

They've said that they aren't interested in doing large-scale TV releases. They've done smaller ones, though. The aforementioned Golden Age of Television collection, Fishing with John, Berlin Alexanderplatz, the TV mini-series versions of Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage and Fanny and Alexander, and Kieslowski's Dekalog. I really don't see them releasing much else in the way of TV. Maybe the TV version of Das Boot.

Personally, I'd love them to do the mid-90s Showtime anthology series Fallen Angels: 16 half-hour episodes of crime pulp adaptations. Among the source stories are ones by Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Mickey Spillane, Cornell Woolrich, Evan Hunter (Ed McBain), Walter Mosley, Jim Thompson, and James Ellroy.

Directors includes Steven Soderbergh, Peter Bogdanovich, Alfonso Cuarón,
Agnieska Holland, and Jonathan Kaplan, as well as directorial efforts by Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Kiefer Sutherland.

There was also another anthology series on Showtime that would fit into Criterion's slate: Picture Windows, with stories inspired by art masterpieces. Six half-hour episodes from directors Norman Jewison, Peter Bogdanovich, John Boorman, Jonathan Kaplan, Bob Rafaelson, and Joe Dante.

I have never heard of either of these series before (likely because I don't think Showtime was available here in Canada in the 90s) but would buy either one. "Fallen Angels", in particular, sounds like it was created for me. Love those writers.

I just hope Criterion (and other labels) aren't done with releasing Altman films. There's plenty that deserve to see some attention.
Scorpion/Kino is releasing his "Fool for Love" on blu ray in June.

The Golden Age of Television is an elusive title for me to purchase. Whenever a 50% sale comes up; I concentrate so much on BDs that I forget to look at DVDs. If, by a miracle, I happen to remember by that time it’s always oos.

I’d love to see Criterion (or anybody!) release the TV version of Das Boot. I have the DVD of it and I’ve been hoping it’d get an upgrade.

If Criterion ever did release more TV I would kill for a complete series of The Adventures of Pete and Pete with the music intact, commentaries, shorts, promos, etc. It wouldn't be a lot to create as some of this already exists, just not in HD format. The third season has famously never been released despite it being produced and ready to ship (like, they literally made copies of the show and just kept them somewhere rotting away).
